Collyer leads Harrah past Westmoore for title
Erika Ankney and Ali Brzozowski were in foul trouble, so Maddison Collyer went to work like she had for two previous games in Westmoore’s Lady Jaguar Classic.
It couldn’t have been at a better time.
Collyer took control of the second half as Class 4A’s No. 2-ranked Harrah rolled past Class 6A’s No. 6 Westmoore for a 68-52 win for the tournament title Monday night.
“She didn’t do anything in these three games she hasn’t done all year or last year or her whole career,” Harrah coach Jeff Mahoney said.
“She’s a smooth character. She makes everybody else better, and that’s what a point guard is supposed to do.”
Collyer, who has signed with Oklahoma Christian, scored 14 of her 21 points in the second half to earn tournament MVP honors. She also had four of her six assists and two steals in that span.
And this happened as she was forced to guard Westmoore star Jessi Murcer more than expected with Ankney in foul trouble. Murcer scored 24 points, but nothing came easily.
“She’s such a good scorer — and when I say scorer she has a lot of ways she can score the basketball,” Mahoney said. “For the most part we knew where she was at. We just wanted to make somebody else beat us.”
Harrah (10-1) jumped to a 19-point lead early in the fourth after a four-point spurt by freshman Katie King, which included a 3-pointer just before the buzzer to end the third.
“I just tried to get people coming off the bench confidence,” Collyer said. “We have a lot of great players on this team that can take the role when some of us get in foul trouble. I just try to encourage them.”
