Hollis Price talks 2002 Final Four, Buddy and life at Houston

Nice to see that Hollis is still a Sooner at heart!

It is great that Coach Kruger hosts those Legends weekends over the summer, where the OU basketball alumni are invited back to campus for an annual reunion with teammates and fans. That annual event is just one of many things that makes the OU basketball program special.

Ever get to know Buddy Hield?

I’ve met him twice. Once in Oklahoma for Legends weekends and then met him his freshman season at Texas when he was hurt. I’ve never seen him play. Watching him play, he’s a bigger, stronger, more athletic and better shooter than I was. He reminds me of myself in the passion and joy he brings to the game. He’s a better me.

I would have taken Hollis as a freshman, soph, and junior over Buddy at the same year.

But there is no doubt Buddy as a senior has blown away just about any season any OU player has had.

Buddy has blown away most players when they were seniors.

I wanted to argue this, but after looking back, I agree 100%.

I don't know -- Wayman's sophomore season and Adams' junior campaign stack up pretty well.

And stats-wise, Buddy's second and third seasons compare very well indeed with Hollis's.

Hield averaged 17 points, 2 assists, 2 turnovers, 1 steal and 4/5 rebounds in those seasons.

Price averaged 12/16 points, 5/3 assists, 2 turnovers, 2 steals and 3 rebounds.

It's an interesting debate. Would've been interesting to see the numbers Hollis could've put up if he'd been asked to do as much as Buddy in regards to carrying the offense.

I also would've loved to see Hollis play in an era with a little more freedom of movement. Those conference games back then were not for the faint of heart.

Good points.

No slight to either of those legends, who were also different types of players than Buddy, but as far as counting stats go, they benefitted from playing at a faster pace.

The 1984 team had 2,343 FGA and 934 FTA in 34 games. That's 68.9 FGA and 27.5 FTA per game.

The 1975 team had 1,743 FGA and 535 FTA in 26 games. That's 67 FGA and 20.6 FTA per game.

The 2016 team has 2,165 FGA and 723 FTA in 36 games. That's 60.1 FGA and and 20.1 FTA per game.

There are a number of other factors to consider in evaluating their relative productivity and it's hard to compare eras, but Buddy could have cracked 30 PPG playing at those sort of paces.

And the opposite is true when comparing Buddy to Hollis. The 2003 team averaged 51.4 FGA and 18.6 FTA.

It's why a counting stat comparison doesn't really work for a Hollis/Buddy comparison either. Hollis played in an even slower, more deliberate system. Stuff like this is, different roles, different eras of basketball, it's what makes these comparisons almost impossible, really.

Just saw your final point above. We're in agreement.
