As we have seen over the past few weeks, this is a legit Top 25 program and it is filled with young guys. To take the next step for the long-term, a lot of things have to happen. And a lot has to do with the game environment, because this plays a major factor in recruiting.

The LNC is dead compared to so many other arenas throughout the nation. What do you guys think needs to happen to help that? It was embarrassing watching us beat ISU with our home crowd knowing what they have at Hilton.

Interested to see if anyone else feels the same.

Continue to win.

Student attendance would be the place to start . Many other things can help but that would help the most.

Very little can be done by the administration this year to affect attendance at LNC. However looking to the future creating an environment to better attract students can have a significant impact on overall attendance.

I would suggest virtually free tickets for students. Award/recognition programs at every game for student group attendance, etc. With the team winning like it is you can realistically double perhaps in a couple of years triple student attendance if the team continues to improve and win big.

Get 3-4,000 students at the game and they will be loud and rambunctious making the game much more exciting. This environmental improvement on game night will change the things from being just a game to an event which will incent more of the casual basketball fan to become paying fans as they want to be part of the LNC event.

The keys are first winning, second getting student attendance and third attracting the casual fan with regularity.

The only thing I would add to what has been said above, is stop losing home games to teams like LA Tech.

We know we have a finicky basketball fan base. If they think they are going to show up to watch OU at home, only to watch us lose to a bad team, that is going to scare some of them off.

But just keep winning. That always brings them out in time.

Spock nailed it. Not a whole lot can be done this year, but marketing and the AD need to go full force into getting student and Norman residents at the games for next year. This looks similar to the '08 situation where we had sub par attendance (Blake's fr year). We were able to have excellent attendance the NEXt year '09.

Some things that I would recommend:

- Get Kruger and the boys out to the Greek Houses - I would also visit the BYX guys (cape dudes at the football games)
- Cont to work on getting the band to be more rowdy - in the past we have strived for a "professional band" which meant a band who made little noise - fix that.
- Do not sell camera view (lower eastside) seats to people who have not shown up to games during the Kruger era - there are thousands of seats sold each game that are no show
- Announce the upcoming changes (please be a new arena!) regarding basketball
- Make "Buddy love" and Ryan Spangler well known on campus and around Norman - they are our twio most marketable guys.
- Work on having a really big Midnight Madness/Baseline bash next year (I would do it with the women's team). Have some nice prize giveaways for students.

I have put a lot of time into this issue in the past and the number one cure for attendance ails is WINS! I think the team will be very good for the next two years so marketing needs to capitalize on this...

We should have won that game, but La Tech is 15-3 and most of their wins were decisive ones -- many by twenty points or more. They're hardly a bad team; they're a veteran, experienced squad.

And any fan who's focused on that loss in a season like this one, one that's seen us beat texas and #12 Baylor on the road and a top-ten ISU squad at home, may just be hopeless.

They should TAKE AWAY football priority points for excessive no shows. They will never do it, but they should.

Really good stuff. A couple of thoughts.

- LA Tech is a good team. That said, we need to win those games. A better environment at the game, and we do win. Band was not there (probably with football), so they had jazz band with live singers. Never played any walk back, hype music. Very talented artists, but not what should be performing at a D-I basketball game. Understand they are helping University by having them perform and appreciate their talents, but that was odd.

- Environment in college basketball is worth points immediately and attracts recruits for long-term. I've read about all the stuff Kruger did at UNLV with this. The results were pretty amazing. Have to imagine this is important to him here if this is indeed his last run.

- You're so right, students are the key.

- Winning is important to get the ball rolling. The team is doing that. Now is the time to capitalize to win at a higher level. Winning at the highest level is done off the court as well.

Hope admin takes advantage of the opportunity they have for the upcoming years. College basketball is a different beast than college football. Needs to be treated differently if they really value it.

The hard thing to understand about attendance is the number of no-shows. Last home game vs Iowa st, attendance was listed as 11105. Obviously there were not 11000 people there. Plus a lot if those fans that do attend bail at either the under 8 timeout or definitely the under 4 TO. I've even noticed fans not even doing some of the "traditions" like standing until the first made basket of the half, or standing and cheering when the teams comes on the floor at the start or at the half. My guess is we have about 3000 "core fans" that really support the team game in game out. Another 2-3000 come to the games, but as evidenced in the seats around us, are on their phone, or even ipad, most of the game. It's frustrating for me to not see more local support as we have our tickets for the last 12 years, making the drive from Tulsa each game and only miss a couple of games a year.

As far as the theory people but season tickets for football points, I don't buy it. For my $600 I pay for season tickets, I get 1 priority point. If I donated that $600 to my football seating, I would get 18 points. The math doesn't support the theory. Now we might have football fans that buy basketball tickets just for 2-3 games a year, but they don't do it just to help their football points.

Finally what can be done? One, got to get more students. We need 3-4000 students a game, not 400. Second, the overall product of the Thunder has hurt, so we have to step up our marketing and in game LNC environment. Third, we have to find a way to reward those who come to the games by rewarding seating location. Make the lower bowl the same donation and season ticket price as the upper level for those that show up.

And most of all, keep winning.

demolish noble arena, build arena on campus and reach out to the community of norman

Season ticket holders who are not going to the games can let someone else use their tickets. This is obviously not happening, so one solution could be to make all season tickets to be picked up at LNC prior to each game. Have a cut-off time, and all no-show tickets would then be re-sold as general admission ($10?)
price. That could get more interest from fans, especially students, to show up.

Myself as a season ticket holder would have NO problem with such a policy.

Also, I think the upcoming TCU game on Jan 22 is the first home game since school has resumed. Maybe adjust that time frame???? Let out earlier in Dec & come back earlier?? It's Conference Season!!!

I think this would help....

Only problem with this is a 6 PM tip and I don't get there til 6:15 due to traffic coming from the office

The present LNC should not be keeping one fan from attending the game. The viewing line of sight is more than adequate regardless where you are setting. When the LNC approaches full it is plenty noisy as I have had season tickets since before Billy Tubbs and I have seen the LNC more than intimidating multiple times. Students and fans intimidate. Facilities are only a minor catalyst to intimidation. Trust me 12,000 fans can and will make all of the noise needed to get the desired effect on the opponent. I have seen it at LNC dozens of times.

Amenities for the fan with better restrooms and concession stands could be improved but even they are not terrible. Access and parking at the LNC are as good as it can get in Norman.

It is totally cost prohibitive to demolish LNC and build a new facility on campus. First the space required to build a basketball area that seats 10-13,000, has practice facilities comparable to LNC and parking that will accommodate 6,000-12,000 fans will approach costing $300 million or more with land acquisition cost. Not to mention that the on campus space is vitally needed for academic expansion not athletic needs. Remember OU is an academic institution first that uses athletics as a means to keep alumni attached to the university for donation needs and campus entertainment. That's it!

I know many will say parking on campus will not be a problem as they presently accommodate parking for tens of thousands on football Saturday. That is comparing apples to oranges. Easy access free parking is a mandatory requirement to get basketball attendance at the level needed.

Moreover the access to an on campus facility for basketball games will further drive the OKC metro fan to their TV set as it would take another 10-20 minutes each way to get in and out of Norman to the campus and on the road home. Hence more fans would be incented more so than LNC to leave the game earlier to avoid the traffic thus having a negative impact on needed end of game intimidation.

Spend a $100 million, maybe less, refurbing LNC and we would have a facility comparable to any facility at any university that has easy access, plenty of free parking and cost about $200 million less money. Maybe even be able to get the fan closer to the court.

What would you say the day you are running late or get stuck in traffic and they sold your ticket? The concept has some logic to it but I see a lot of problems.

The LNC is fine...spend some money to make improvements and that should be enough.

Winning cures all.

They've already sent out questionnaires about what tickets holders want in a renovated LNC, so the pipe dream about an arena on campus can stop.
