Hornbeak/Nikebasketball

I would rather play 25 minutes a game than go down to a mid major and play 30. It's not like he would ever be "the man" at a high major school, doubt he would at any D-1 school in general.

He would be "the man" at 100+ D-1 schools.

There are well over 300 D-1 teams. 100 of them are simply not very good. I think virtually anyone in the rotation at OU could be the star at over 100 schools.

Lets just hope he realizes his chance of getting into the NCAA post season is better where he is at than at one 100-200 "not very good" teams. I believe he will play started minutes if he stays. Subbing for Woodard and Heild/Cousins. Also I think he is a better option that Woodard if you are wanting to drive the lane and challenge a big guy. Jordan just bounced off big guys this year. Jelon is more athletic that way I think.

Closer to 200 I would guess.

imo 100 is a small stretch but 200 is a huge stretch.

I guess you could look at how he performed against some of those 200 teams to get an idea of how he stacks up with that kind of talent

I'm pretty high on Hornbeak. I prefer to consider that it was weeks after he came back from the foot injury before he was at 100%.

I hope you are right. I just don't see the athleticism or shooting ability to be a star on lower D1 teams

Me neither. He could start on a low major team but at this point in his career I don't think he's going to be a star. He doesn't do anything on the offensive end overly well and to really make an impact he needs to improve his handle and shooting.

I am sure the injury did set him back a bunch though, we saw Buddy and Cousins make big jumps in their games (some good some bad) while Hornbeak had his progression hindered.

Definitely seems the best way for him to make an impact is in a 6 man role like he's in right now and he fits what we need really well. Hope he stays because if he does he will win us some games next year, also he was really clutch in more then a couple tight games last year something we desperately need.

Is it really worth more starting on a low D1 that doesn't go anywhere as opposed to making an impact on a high major that is gonna be in the tourney for the rest of his career ?

Sometimes players have a hard time living up to expectations, or to their true talent levels, when they are asked to be role players. I agree that Hornbeak, at times, doesn't look all that special. But what if he were given the freedom to do what he wants? What if he got to play SG, which is what he is? What if instead of 4 shot attempts per game, he was given 13 (like Hield)? Maybe he'd look different. Maybe he'd feel more confident. Maybe he would look like a different player.

Cam is a perfect example of this. I don't doubt that Cam is a better player today than he was a year, or two years ago. But is he better to the extent his stats appear to show? No way. But his role changed, and that probably helped a bunch. Maybe Hornbeak would look the same with a different role. Too bad that is a role he will probably never have at OU.

You are on to something here WT. Cam did improve his shooting stroke and accuracy. And maybe he earned the opportunity. But, they ran lots and lots of stuff for Cam. Getting him the ball where he had the opportunity to make a play had as much to do with Cam's increased production as did his individual improvement.

Buddy was pretty much the second option on actions for Cam. But, not a lot was done for Buddy. Not much at all was run for Cousins. Buddy and Cousins got what they got pretty much on their own.

As far as Hornbeak, Woodard can't guard Hornbeak and Hornbeak can guard Woodard. I know there is more to it than that. But, if Hornbeak's shot starts going down, there won't be such a stark looking difference between them.

Sometimes kids want to get away from certain people or situations in their lives. The ole "the grass is greener on the other side of the fence" syndrome.
