Hornbeak

I wanted to get the board's thoughts on Jelon's potential and on what type of player that he can be over the next three years.

I thought that he was our most complete guard last season on the roster. I think he has a good stroke (needs to look for his shot more), decent handles (needs to improve), average driving ability (I'd like to see him do it more and do some drive and kicks), good court vision, plus defense, toughness that embodies what Lon is looking for in his system, and I think he has the potential to be a vocal leader.

In my opinion, Hornbeak is the perfect Kruger system player: an intelligent, four year player with good size and toughness.

I would agree that Hornbeak was the most ready to play off the 3 freshman guards. He was starting to round into a really nice player by seasons end.

But, it is my opinion that Buddy especially and Cousins to some degree have higher ceilings. I hope Booker compares well with Hornbeak.

From what I have read about Booker, he sounds a lot like Pledger but a little more athletic. He sounds like a shooter that will need to learn the rest of the game. If he's more athletic he will be able to get away with a little bit more than Pledger was in the beginning especially defensively but it remains to be seen how far along he is mentally which can make a huge difference when making the transition from high school to college ball.

I agree that Hornbeak is our most complete guard. I think he will be a player that over his 4 years will never "wow" anybody and may even always be a little underrated. He'll be our most fundamentally sound guard. A kind of calm and cool player, a jack of all trades masts of none. The type of player that we've been missing for some time. Now that the freshman jitters are out of the way I'm really anxious to see the progress he makes in the offseason.

I see Hornbeak as a poor mans Hollis Price. I really like his game but I agree that Hield and possibly Cousins have higher ceilings. Regardless, I believe he is going to develop into one of those solid, heady guards every good team has. Shoot the ball well, handle it well enough to play some point, drive and attack the basket, good assist to TO stats, defend at a high level, and be a great teammate. I also thought he showed a lot of toughness in that game he got his teeth knocked out.

REGARDLESS of who we recruit...Hornbeak will be in the starting lineup for his entire four years at OU because he is a + player every time he steps on the court. Defense, rebounding, savvy, toughness, and solid shooting stroke means he'll be on the court a lot.

I expect him to be a 9 to10 ppg scorer next year, a bit better the following year...As a senior, I wouldn't be surprised to see he and Buddy both over 15 ppg.

I compare him to Brandon Triche from Syracuse...basically a guy you always want in the lineup just because your team is better with him on the floor.

Hard to gauge. He has plenty of physical ability. He seems to be pretty well skilled. The third part, what's "inside", is the hardest for fans to gauge. I still think he has a chance to be similar to Hollis, without that "super stardom" that Hollis had.
