ESPN/ABC/Fox Sports will get all but maybe one football game per year. They will also get their best basketball games. Can a network really make money with non-revenue sports, a couple mediocre football games and middle of the road basketball games? What cable company will pay for this? What consumer outside of die hard Longhorn fans will subscribe to this channel?

The Big Ten Network lost tons of money in their first three years and they have a ton more football and basketball games to offer.

What am I missing here?

The only way I see it being viable is if the schools put their egos aside and make it a State of Texas sports Network. Include SMU, TCU, Houston, Tech a&m, texas, and Baylor. Maybe even UNT and Sam Houston State. Then people atleast in Texas would be able to watch sports from which ever school they want. But I dont see that happening, too many egos involved

Agreed. A conference network could do OK because it represents a region.

But seriously do you think A&M or TCU fans are going to stand for the satellite or cable company paying a subscription fee on their behalf when they hate the Longhorns?

So that leaves you with PPV. A model that has never been successful outside of boxing matches.

It will move toward a State of Texas network, and I'm sure that may be part of the reason A&M jumped so quickly back into the Big XII boat. Furthermore, the earning from this network are only expected (based on projections) to net UT $3-5MM per year...that is nothing to them.
