He is making less than $2 million annually to coach UNC. That is good for 13th in the conference. If they didn't think he was the right guy, why did they hire him? If they think he's the right guy, why did they low-ball him on salary?

Because no one else was going to hire him as a head coach for a ton of $.

This gives them an easy out to fire if it doesn’t work out. He took it betting that he’ll succeed and get a raise fairly quickly.

They did the same thing when Dean Smith retired with Bill Guthridge. Granted he was left way better players than Hubert Davis has. All the talk about potential coaches since Dean retired is they have to be from the UNC family.

Maybe he needs to earn his keep before they grant him a larger salary.

Seems really cheap to me. At a place like unc, the head coach should never make less than $2mm. Ou is basically doubling them up with Moser’s contract.

Being at Carolina, he'll have lots of other avenues for compensation, especially from Jordan/Nike. Difference here is the Heels' AD isn't left carrying the weight of the whole bag. Hubert was on the 1990 Tar Heel team, so he too can smoke a large turd in Hell.

Speaking of the fine folks in Chapel Hill, I've said it before and I'll say it again: NOBODY did less with more than Dean Smith.

He was previously an assistant. Most of all the other coaches in that league have years of head coaching experience at that school or had head coaching experience at previous institutions before taking a job in the ACC. It's an apples to crab apple comparison which is being made.

Except for maybe coach K, who can also smoke a large turd in hell.

I'd say Calapari is quickly catching up to Smith in the less with more in terms of national titles. only has 1 national title in 12 seasons with all that talent he has had at his disposal. Still has plenty of years in front of him but feels like he should have at least 2 or 3.

All of these things you guys are talking about is proof in the pudding for why March tournament results are a lousy way to gauge a coach.

i would think winning your sports ultimate prize is a fair way to judge coaches at blue blood programs with more advantages than 95% of the other programs they compete against, if OU had that much talent pass through the program and only have 1 title in 12 years we would all say that coach has underachieved when it mattered the most. it does not lessen all the other wins, accomplishments or culture you built.

Shashevski won the thing five times. Dean Smith only won twice, and it required monumental gaffes by his opponent in each game to seal the deal.

NOBODY did less with more than Dean Smith. NOBODY!

He's been to the Elite 8 or better in 7/10 seasons at UK. I would love to fail that well.

I’d put Calipari right their near the top too. A lot of lottery picks for one title.

And if we’re gauging March results, Mr William Self has very very little to show for all his talent at Illinois and Kansas. Only a coaching mistake by Cal not to foul & a last second shot to tie and win in OT has kept Self from posting a big goose-egg.

Victim of more upsets as a #1 or #2 prior to the FF than any coach I can remember.

Why do you think it’s low-balling? What has Davis done as a head coach? Who was UNC competing against in hiring him?

If he wins, his salary will climb in a hurry.
