I can't believe coach won't hit the magic button

I just don't think Capel is the answer for OU basketball, for the sole reason that the players don't have any respect and trust in him. Players have had problems on and off the court all season long, that's the indication of no respect. Capel has not shown us that he has the leadership quality that a good program needs. Have you heard any of our players in press conferences or intervews said anything like, we trust our coach, we believe in our coach to turn things around? I haven't heard anything like that. If the same players come back next reason, we will have the exact same problems like this year because the respect and trust are hard to earn back once you lost them. I am not sure OU has the patient to wait another 3-4 losing seasons before Joe C makes necessory changes.

BTW, did you notice after Tony fouled out, neither Capel nor any coaching staff greeted and hug/shake hands with Tony on the sideline? What kind of coaching staff are these? I completely lost failth in Capel after this game.

Colorado, Nebraska, Tech, Baylor and aTm are the last 5 programs in the conference (not in that order). Iowa State has quite a few good seasons and had more tourney appearances in the 80's and 90's than Baylor and aTm combined (historically).

And here's what Baylor has done in the last 3 seasons after nearly getting the death penalty following the 02-03 season:

07-08 11 seed in the NCAAs, lost in the first round
08-09 struggled most of the year but advanced to the big 12 tournament final and then the NIT championship game
09-10 currently ranked #21, 23-6 overall record and 10-5 in the league

What a terrible program.

3 and 6 year time periods are not what is used to measure the level of a program. Sorry...try again.

Capel has no discipline on this team and from what I can tell, the players don't respect him. Just like today, down by 12 with 5 minutes left and TMG shoots a 3 with 30 seconds on the shot clock. Capel turns around and bends over like "I can't believe he just did that". He should have pulled TMG at that point and let him sit. He should have done this earlier in the year with a number of the players. Had he instilled some discipline, the players would either embrace the discipline and some may leave (if they don't like discipline). The ones that leave are the ones you don't want anyway.

However, now we've got another year ahead of us and if everybody returns, the same problems are going to exist. If some leave, depending on who it is, we could be a worse team next year. He's in a catch 22 now, the way I see it. All because he didn't instill some discipline. Too much hippin' and hoppin' and not enough jumpin' and runnin'...

I've never argued we are a bad program, which is why I say it's embarrassing to get swept by aTm, Baylor and Tech, chief.

I noiticed that also and it bothered me to...capels body language is no better than the rest of the teams....he is setting a bad example right now

When did our 4 freshmen ever really play together? When one guy played well the others just stayed in the same court but didn't do much. And we never saw anyone get better on defense for the most part. They were bette at transition defense but our half court defense never got any better. It got worse at times.

Maybe it's not that simple after you lose three quality seniors, one the national player of the year. Maybe a rash of injuries and playing with four freshmen in your top seven has something to do with the season we're having.

That's way too rational an explanation... sooner boards are no place for rationality!

TMG - I would say he improved, because we pretty much put the ball in his hands and said...make plays. Had more confidence and quicker trigger as the year progressed. Not sure if he improved any on defense, and probably forced the issue at times. But overall great as a FR, improved.

Tiny - People tend to forget Tiny played fairly well early. It just seemed like he started each game with 3 fouls, thus limiting minutes. Defense is still a long way from being where OU needs him. His guys tend to get some easy looks. Overall, I wouldn't say he improved.

Pledger - Stroked it pretty well early, then hit his wall. Once again, nice game today, but hard to say he improved. Didn't see anything to get me excited about him being a great defender, either. Overall, not improved.

Fitz - I would say improved. He seems to hit the midrange shot about 3 out of 4, and can hit them contested. Was in better shape by the end of the year. Seemed far less gassed. Overall, improved.

For me, 2 of them improved, but huge stretch to say all of them improved. Ultimately, still frosh who gained invaluable experience. Hopefully the work & improvement is there in the off-season.

Just brainstorming, but maybe it's time for Coach Capel to separate himself from being "one of the guys" to being the one in charge, letting the players know there will be consequences for less than 100 percent effort and bonehead playing.
