I can't believe coach won't hit the magic button

When you treat people like he treated people you tend to piss people off. Comes with the territory.

Not really sure to what you are referring... By "people" are you talking about players? Or are you talking about fans, coaches?

If players, I agree. He wasn't exactly the definition of a players coach, hence the number of transfers throughout the years.

If you're talking about besides the players though, I disagree on that. Save for Bob Knight and Sutton (who's opinion on character evaluations is basically invalid), he was well liked by coaches across the league, as well as the fans.

He was foolish for what he did at Indiana, and was very, very tough on his players, but he is a good person and a good family man. He's never had a problem with pissing people off, unless there's something you know that not many other people know about.

I would guess Cheno was referring to how Sampson reportedly treated donor's at the summer alumni tours (with Sherri Coale, Bob Stoops, and other asst. coaches). A number of people on the old boards used to talk about how rude Sampson was at those events...not sure if that is true or not.

I also disagree that other coaches except Sutton and Knight liked Kelvin. I think Barnes liked him because they went back a long way, but I think most coaches disliked him for some of the things he was accused of (like keeping the Bynum kid from going to osu (reportedly), and the phone call thing). Kelvin was also accused of "dirty recruiting".

I don't know if any Kelvin did any of these things, but he was accused of it.

Sky, I don't disagree with most of what you said. I think Coach Capel could have done a better job of bringing in players who were good enough to push starters for playing time.

Youth and inexperience played a role this season. But OU has signed too many players in the last three years who barely sniffed the court, or they washed out for one reason or another before they had a chance to prove their worth.

It's impossible to develop quality depth when you lose guys like Pattillo, Early, Maze, Neysmith, Cannon and Clark early in their career every season. Five of those players (Pattillo, Clark, Cannon, Early and Neysmith) would have been juniors and seniors this season. Even one or two more upperclassmen on this year's roster could have made a huge difference.

IMO, Coach Capel has to start signing good players who are also good people; kids who don't mind hard work and who want to do the right things without being told or have someone watch their every move. We will never have the kind of depth it takes to win championships if we continue to lose players at an alarming rate, or bring in recruits who aren't capable of pushing the top guys for playing time.

:clap

It's one thing to be a bad team because you are not as talented as your opponent but having players NOT PLAY HARD 100% OF THE TIME just turns my stomach. It really does.

OK, count me as one that is glad this season is over, well, ALMOST over. While I think Coach Capel could have done a better job, where were the team captains in all of this mess. Being a team captain has the responsibility of showing the young pups how it's done at OU, specifically under Coach Capel. I'm sure that TC was one captain and probably WW was another. Was Cade a captain? TC has been here from the beginning and Cade was also a Capel recruit.

Since I'm not part of that inner-circle I can't say what went on behind the scenes, but it seems to me that some of the butt-kicking/a** chewing should have come from the upper-classmen. I know there are only a few, but they still have a responsibility as a captain to try and be the coach when coach ain't there or looking. Maybe they tried, I don't know, but I hadn't seen it metioned and thought I'd give my 2-cents worth. JMHO.

If it is not the coaches job/fault to control and lead the team, why does OU pay the coach so much?

Players have NO responsibility? Obviously, Coach is ultimately responsible. If I came across that way, it was not my intention. It's a chemistry thing from the Coach on down and each has a responsibility, including the captains.

I remember that on the old boards as well. I don't know if its true either. My uncle would be at those tours, and he always thought Sampson was a nice guy. But that may not have been the consensus opinion of KS. Who knows.

I don't want to get into every story at his camps but generally speakingin high school I would be at his camps and he was great to all the players, and went out of his way to make sure every overnight camper was enjoying their stay. Normally coaches aren't involved--and aren't nearly as friendly--as Sampson was.

Disagree. My families' Drumright/Ok State ties has lead to us being close family friends to both a current Big 12 coach and a former Big 12 coach, and both of them always had good things to say about Kelvin. From these 2 coaches, we were always told that Sutton was disliked because he was just a shrewd person in general, and not many of the coaches were fond of Roy Williams (I'm sure him always winning had something to do with it), but KS was well liked around the Big 12 circles. A coach or 2 may have had a problem with him, but for the most part he was well-liked.

thanks for the info. I would definitely trust your sources more than the hearsay I've always heard on a message board.

As for the comment about Kelvin's basketball camp...I attended Billy Tubbs basketball camp as an adolescent and the only time I saw him was for the pic at the beginning of camp (the Sunday you check-in). He was never around after that.

Gracias. I'm sure some don't believe me--which is fine--message board material is a lot of times just hearsay, but if people want to know more about this situation they can PM me.

Exactly. KS was always around and highly involved at camps, I'm sure other posters that have attended his camps would agree. I played AAU and college ball so naturally my summers were always occupied with camps (when I wasn't in an AAU tourney), and of all the Big 12 and SEC camps I went to KS was by far the most involved. Most coaches would hardly spend the time there. That's not a bad thing, I just think it shows that KS is a lot friendlier and genuine person towards people then some posters believe.

As another who went to the Sampson camps, I can attest he was there quite a bit as well. But as stoops4pres said, it's not necessarily a good or bad thing. Went to Bob Knight's Texas Tech camp on two separate occasions, learned more in those few days then probably the other camps combined and he was never there.
