I know it's probably inevitable that he is staying
1) New coaches. Guys that aren't heavily NCAA Div 1 experienced just don't cut it. It's part of the reason we look so poorly coached. If we keep the same assistants I don't see much improvement.

2) Get rid of the scholarships of the players that are basically doing nothing on the roster right now. Hardrick and Thompson, if they want to stay at OU and even on the team fine, but they don't deserves scholarships. We need guys that can actually play. Keeping those that you recruited on scholarship may show your loyalty to players. But as far as wins and losses go, keeping those guys hurts a team that lacks depth. I don't see anyway we win enough to keep Capel's job next year with the roster we have coming back. We basically have no speed on the sings, our fastest wing is Pledger next year and he's got okay speed, but not enough.

We need to add some players that can play, not guys that averaged 20 minutes 9 points and 6 rebounds a game in JUCO like Goff and Thompson did last year. Adding these type of players just won't cut it, they end up sitting on the bench and wasting scholarships.

As far as expectations for next year. We have to make the NCAA Tournament and compete for the top half of the Big 12. Being a bubble team and just getting out isn't enough at OU even if it is a massive improvement. If these expectations are too high, then Jeff Capel is outclassed and shouldn't be at an Oklahoma.

Your last sentence is the one thing that is apparent.

I see what you are saying. However, who are we going to sign if you take away their scholarships? A vast majority of the best players have already signed. This is why this situation is not good either way.

To my knowledge that is the plan for every coach in America. Come on, you think they recruit these cats to sit the bench? If he didnt sign some of these guys we dont have enough guys to practice with...

2 of the top players in the state are still available. I'm sure there's lots of others around. The top players in this state have done Capel some good. Blake Griffin, Cade Davis, Tyler Neal, Taylor Griffin even though Capel didn't really recruit him. I don't pretend to follow recruiting that much but I'm sure others are out there. Maybe not McDonald All American type guys, but good solid players that can fill a roster and actually play a role on a team. There's lots of those.

Then why is he signing guys that aren't really doing much at the JUCO level?

I'm kind of torn on getting rid of Thompson. We need the body for practice/depth, but if you get rid of him, and sign a true frosh that won't contribute either, then you essentially waste that roster spot for three more years.

I also have a hard time telling JUCO's to leave, b/c most can't transfer to another D1 school. If Thompson is practicing hard and going to class, and he wants to stay, he should probably get that chance.

Hardrick on the other hand.....

Why?

Unless they used their redshirt in JUCO (which is a rarity) they can hop on board another program for a year. Perfect example...Juan Patillo.

Well, sometimes you strike out on guys like Nick, sometimes guys dont turn out to be something you thought they were. Maybe he isnt going hard in practice, maybe he has missed time, maybe he just doesnt have it in him when the lights come on and there is 10,000 sold attendance, (act. 5500)..

I think CJ is playing well when he is in there. Hopefully another year in the system, he can play more next year. He is smart, athletic, but undersized for the 4 or 5...

It takes some time to transition to the d1 level... See fitz and bird, i know they are hs guys, but it takes time.

CJ Washington averaged 20 and 12 at the JUCO level. He was a star at that level. You can't say the same about Goff or Thompson.

Sure seems like a lot of them HAVE used their redshirt. Maybe I'm misremembering though.

Youre right. But I and most people feel that we need an athletic Big (goff) that will get in there and rebound the ball. Im willing to take a chance on goff, its amazing how peoples opinion's change when someone doesnt come in and become a star that everyone thought they were going to be.

Most Juco guys take one year to adjust to D-1.

I think CJ will be much improved next year. I think that applies to Blair also (though not a Juco).
