Iowa state beat UVa tonight 60-47. This is the same UVa team that beat OU by 30.

Little is gained by exaggerating our struggles. We lost by 18 to UVA. And comparing scores sheds very little light on any team's worth. We could have gotten UVA at their best, and ISU could have caught them at their worst.

For instance, our loss to UK came by the Wildcats' second smallest winning margin of the season. They beat Notre Dame, Indiana, and UConn worse than they beat us. And they beat Washington, ranked #11 at the time, by only five fewer points than they defeated us.

None of which means a darned thing.

A 7-5 Iowa team minus 5 starters just beat Missouri. The same Missouri that beat OU by 15. What does this tell us?

Kentucky didn't beat UConn. UConn beat them by 17.

Oops! Thanks for the correction.

Anyway, my point stands. I'll bet UConn has a score this season that doesn't jibe with their big win over UK.

Serious inquiry:

I have not seen ISU play this year. I do know that their coach is a hometown hero type who hasn't coached at all outside of a year as an assistant with the T-Wolves. My question is, does this guy have a "style"? Or a "system"? I read so much on this board about Capel's lack of system, or lack of identity, whatever. What exactly is Hoiberg doing that's working with that team that finished 15-17 (4-12) last year? ISU is 12-2 and has some pretty impressive wins on their resume', and they're beating up on inferior opponents. Their two losses are at UNI by 6, and to Cal by 3, which are respectable. ISU could be a sleeper this year in conference. But seriously, what has Hoiberg done that Capel evidently cannot do?

He probably is a better coach.

No, Hoiberg is not a better coach. However, he is smart enough to hire top-notch assistants, something Jeff Capel doesn't have at OU. I think the Tiny Gallon situation has really hurt Coach Capel in attracting good assistants. Even if there is a resolution to that soon, Capel being on the hot seat won't likely attract anyone of note. Ugh, it's frustrating.

I would agree scores are not comparative, however some on here have said ISU is not as good as their record indicates because they have only beaten bottom feeders. Some of these same posters were pointing to the ISU game as a possible conference win for the sooners.

ISUs win last night was better than any single win of ours this season.

I just took a dump that had to be a foot long, but the one prior was just a baby. Must mean my next one will be another baby?

Hoiberg has described his style in detail... He wants lots of 3pt shooters and wants to spread the floor as much as possible to create driving lanes. They will shoot a lot of threes under Hoiberg. They will also full-court press, trap, etc a lot on defense.

The other thing is that Hoiberg hired Bobby Lutz, who has 400 career wins as a D1 coach, signed 5 top 20 recruiting classes at Charlotte, went to the NCAA 5 times, and the NIT 3 times. In other words, he got a big time assistant coach.

ISU can shoot 3's better than anyone in the conference and one of the better assist guys in the league to set everyone up, and he also averages 17 a game.

So is it a case of when they are hot from 3 they can compete with anyone in conference and when cold can get beat badly by anyone in the conference?

Ya, they will need to hit 3's to win against good teams. They have some good slashers though in Melvin Ejim and Jake Anderson, but they primarily need to hit 3's.

Mike Scott did not play in the Iowa State game. He had 5 straight double-doubles going into whatever injury that has caused him to miss 4 of the last 5games.They did manage to beat LSU pretty easily tonight without him.

In case people don't remember him, he was the big man that had 27 and 15 against us, not to be confused with the former Astros pitcher.

This guy likes the way you think.

We played Virginia a day after giving it our all against Kentucky. ISU got time to prepare against them...we didn't.
