ISU hires Tj Otzelberger

Nothing about this hire is scary. He wasn't exactly excelling at UNLV.

UNLV has hit hard times, I think that’s 3 coaches that are current Big 12 coaches now that they have lost Kruger, Beard and this guy.

Could see them/boosters making a run at Ricky Pitino....they need a name coach in a bad way, and they would put up with any trouble that follows him

pitino said iona will be his last job, so unlv is definitely in his top 5. pitino brought vegas to louisville, could you imagine him in vegas? i will be opening up my recruitment if it happens.

Hair gel will be in short supply.

Read something that Pitino has a $10 million buyout at Iona, if true not sure UNLV could raise that money from boosters.

It’s kind of crazy how far they have fallen, they use to be the team out West in the 80’s early 90’s (like Gonzaga is today) and now they have to fight to finish above .500

Were they doing it playing by the rules? Tarkanian showed his hand.

College basketball is shady as hell then and now, I doubt they were doing much different than anyone else. I think one of their issues w/ Tark was some out of control boosters that had checkered pasts getting to close to the players on the Augmon, Larry Johnson and Anderson Hunt team that won the NCAA title.

Two tourney bids and no wins in seven seasons. He is young and fiery though. :)

Needs to be an assistant at another major program and get some non Duke experience. Duke is a product of Talent, not as much X's and O's. The only programs Duke experience would translate to are UNC and Kentucky.

Coach K, Williams and Calipari are great coaches don't get me wrong. But they are all resting on their laurels now. The talent they bring in on a yearly basis has made them lazy (for lack of a better term) coaches. They're more player personality/talent mangers now than strategic coaches and that's the experience assistants get.

Schools love coaches from the Coach K coaching tree. Love their fire, personality and relatability. They're great people persons. Then the shine wears off. Capel is a prefect example.

It needs to be somebody that has proven they can win without elite talent. OU has never recruited elite talent consistently, and when we have, it's usually been an in-state guy.

Somebody that has a system. Develops players. Gets his guys to play hard every night. Fundamentals. Recruits well to his system.

I hate to say it, but that sounds like Kelvin Sampson. I'm not saying we get him, but I'd love somebody like him or from his system. Somebody like Beard (though less sleazy). Different system, but somebody like Drew at Baylor. Teams aren't wildly different year to year. Musselman would have been fantastic.

There is no guarantee we pick the right guy. That's a chance you take. That said, I'll be super upset if we take the easy route in a couple of years and hire Hinson or somebody else from Lon's tree.

I doubt UNLV cheated any more than other programs back then. You have to remember why Tark was so successful. The first two coaches selected for a "Mt Rushmore of head coaches recruiting JUCO talent" would be Tark and Billy Tubbs. This is why that from 1991 until the end of time OU will never again have four #1 seeds over a six year period of time. Let's just say those two coaches were born at the right time. Fortunately, OU made a lot better decisions post-Tubbs than UNLV did post-Tark.
