The Baylor murderer from 2003 was released on parole.

Idk how murderers get out less than their sentence all of the time.. I was raised believing that if you killed someone, it was like an automatic, you get a life sentence situation (I still believe that's how it should be).

Why did bliss leave ou for smu? Was there any rumblings that bliss cheated at ou too? Idk how bliss got away with no charges at baylor.. did he get in any trouble from ncaa?

I was a freshman during Bliss' last year at OU and I don't remember any NCAA issues.

They made the NCAA Tournament in 1979 (lost to Larry Bird at Indiana State) and had a good group returning in 1980 but had a tough year and then he left. It didn't seem that anyone cared that he left to be honest.

I know it was the best thing for OU because they hired Billy and went on a good 10 year run.

He did 22 years so he's done his sentence. Usually murders are 25 to life his was 10 years additional but you can get paroled before that. I don't know how Bliss didn't get sentenced for something as bad as he tried to conceal the murder and he still believes his bull**** to this day apparently.

For whatever reason, Bliss did not want to be at OU any longer. If I had to guess why, it would be that he figured it would be a long-term career-killer since OU was about football and Barry Switzer. Bliss clearly mailed in his last season at OU, then left Billy Tubbs with virtually nothing but one solid upperclassman (Raymond Whitley) and one good young talent piece to build around (Chucky Barnett). Beating Texas in the NCAA tournament in 1979 was pretty much the highlight of his NCAA Tournament resume as his best SMU and New Mexico teams struggled in March. What happened at Baylor was an example of perhaps the biggest meltdown by a head coach at any level of any sport EVER. I don't remember what the NCAA did to punish him, but they didn't need to do anything since his coaching career was OVER after that meltdown. When Lon Kruger took over at OU, he set up a scrimmage inviting all the past players and coaches to the event. Bliss got to coach in that game.

I don't know enough about Texas law to speak intelligently on why they released that murderer after 22 years. I only know Texas law by reputation - which is that they are tougher on crime than pretty much every other state. No state executes more murderers than Texas, so my guess is that if he got paroled early there, it likely would have happened in any other state as well.

I thought bliss got invited. It felt a little icky to me. Anyone else feel the same?

I agree it's crazy this guy didn't get a life sentence, WITHOUT parole. In Europe this is common and a small percentage of murderers actually get life w/o Parole, as they focus on the 'rehabilitation' aspect of sentences and returning them back into society, which seems crazy to me!

Man....that seems a lifetime ago. Oddly I was a D3 asst coach close to that time frame and I sat in a gym with Dave Bliss and his first assistant just a few months before that all went down.

Bliss was a SUPER friendly guy. Very personable. The only other D1 head coaches I have met that were that down to earth were Brad Brownell and Rick Barnes.
