"Coach Bill Self, athletic director Sheahon Zenger and the entire Kansas team will travel to Washington, D.C. on Wednesday for the funeral of Lisa Robinson, the mother of sophomore forward Thomas Robinson."

I think its great for the team to be there for the teamate but this just screams NCAA violation. If I am not mistaken the school or coachs cannot pay for this trip by ncaa ruls. each individual player would have to pay there own way to DC. But I guess that is possible

Some UK fan is claiming that the NCAA is allowing KU to pay for the funeral and send the team there.

That is true.

I've even seen people discussing setting up a "fund" for Robinson's little sister who apparently is now an orphan.

I'm all for doing the right thing and all, but college basketball fans don't need to adopt the family. Sucks that his mom died, but sh*t happens. If he didn't play for kansas no one in that state would care.

That's big of you.

OU got special permission for OU fans to help Carl Pendleton's brother when he needed to live with Carl while Carl was still in school. If I remember correctly, Kelvin had to clear it with the NCAA when OU fans donated a semi-trailer full to stuff to Hollis Price's grandparents after they lost everything in Hurricane Katrina.

i see nothing wrong with a donor helping his teammates go to the funeral.

You can take Sawyer out of southern Missouri but u can't take the southern Missouri out of Sawyer.

As an aside, any of the Jayhawk fans on this board, is there any sort of fund other than what is being discussed with the NCAA? I would love to contribute.

Back to Sawyer...what the hell is your beef with something that would benefit an orphan? Do you know any orphans? What would you personally say to them, "**** happens?"

You mean the orphan sister of the guy who's going to be collecting an NBA paycheck a couple years from now?

If you're interested in helping out orphans, there are probably several living in your neighborhood who need your financial support. Robinson's sister will be fine in that regard. Her brother will take care of her. That's not the kind of support she needs right now.

So yeah... my beef isn't with helping orphans. It's more the lack of help orphans without famous siblings tend to receive.

I've got no problem with them all going to the funeral, though. The NCAA has ruled that a violation in the past (I believe kansas was hit for a similar violation a couple decades ago), and IMO that's crap. Supporting one of your student-athletes in a time like that shouldn't be a violation. It should be encouraged.

(And for the record, southern Missouri, and most of the states surrounding it, and pretty much all of the south in general, is a ****hole, and I am thankful every day that I've never lived there)

Sawyer proved what kind of person he is. Ridiculous comment.
Absolutely pathetic. What does it matter to you that KU fans want to help one of their own?
How does it help KU basketball? Robinson is already on the team. KU hoops doesn't benefit.
A 9 year old girl with no family benefits. You all are seeing first hand the no class Missouri fans.
What a joke.

Playmakr here you go....

How many other DC-area orphans have you donated money to lately?

ku wouldn't benefit from giving Tyrel Reed a few thousand bucks tomorrow, either. He's already on the team. Still not allowed.

I get and appreciate the point you are making, with that said, there is nothing wrong with helping this girl.

OU had a high school football recruit ( I think he may have already signed) get shot and killed a few years ago and the ncaa would not let ou or ou fans help the family with funeral type expenses. No way ou could have benefitted from that the kid was dead.

I've got nothing morally against helping her. I just think it's hypocritical to go out of your way to help her if you're not already doing the same for the thousands of other American kids in similar situations (or millions worldwide).

With that kid, no. And maybe with no kids. But you know if the NCAA allowed it there would be sleazeball coaches who did use situations like this as a selling point for their programs (we'll help you out if you're ever in tough times...).

The NCAA almost always takes a very black and white approach to extra benefits. Often that results in stupid rules. But the line has to be drawn somewhere. Is it fair to say you can help a sister, but not a cousin? What if a really good friend of a player needs help?

I understand and I agree, but again, there isn't anything wrong with helping the girl, even if it exposes your general apathy with the issue when it doesn't involve your favorite sports team.

No... but general apathy with exception of cases involving your favorite college sports team is textbook impermissible benefits (which was my original point).

Also, your dollars would go a lot farther if they were donated toward causes that wouldn't have a brother making 6-7 figures within the next two or three years playing professional basketball.

This is true, it was well publicized. The media immediately vilified the guy that had only spent like 25 dollars of his own money and raised the other 5k so the kid could have a proper burial. The person that raised the money was called a booster and accused of basically providing illegal benefits to a dead kid. The kids name was Herman Micthell.

It's ok for Mr Newton to solicit 180k though.

The OU kid had not even signed with OU...he was a commit who was murdered. Also, there were no 9 year old orphans that I know of...

This deal is a special circumstance....Robinson's kid sister is 9 years old and she doesn't have a mother now and her brother lives in Kansas. Major life changing issues. This has little to do with Kansas basketball and a lot to do with using the wads of $ that college sports makes to really make a difference in the life of one of the players and his sister. Don't get on the NCAA for doing the right thing for a change.

He has two other siblings aside from the 9 year old sister.
