Kansas Team going to DC for funeral

Really? I was just making sure you knew there were two other people you should donate your money to besides the sister you already knew about.

Did Thomas Robinson once kick your puppy and then pee in your cheerios?

Or did he shoot your eye out, oh wait wrong KU big.

oh poo.

nothing wrong with helping this little girl.

The OU kid had not even signed with OU...he was a commit who was murdered. Also, there were no 9 year old orphans that I know of...

This deal is a special circumstance....Robinson's kid sister is 9 years old and she doesn't have a mother now and her brother lives in Kansas. Major life changing issues. This has little to do with Kansas basketball and a lot to do with using the wads of $ that college sports makes to really make a difference in the life of one of the players and his sister. Don't get on the NCAA for doing the right thing for a change.

While that is true he was not signed, he was on pace to graduatebim December and enroll in January. He was killed in August. He was about to get out of a bad situation. Since NCAA has no early signing period he could not sign.

Nor does she have her grandma and grandpa who also passed away within the last month. So her grandma, grandpa & mother have died in the last month. We're talking about a little girl here.
Totally agree on the NCAA genius. They should do things like this as often as possible.

I've got nothing morally against helping her. I just think it's hypocritical to go out of your way to help her if you're not already doing the same for the thousands of other American kids in similar situations (or millions worldwide).

blah, blah, blah.....that is so weak. You could say that about EVERY charity. Hey nobody give to United Way in your town unless you can give to United Way in every town across the USA. :facepalm
Using your logic nobody in the world, and I mean nobody, should or could afford charitable giving.
If you live in QuinSnyderVille, Missouri and a little boy gets cancer and the town holds charity events for him, has donation cans at the local grocery store, etc does that mean nobody should support him unless they can support all kids with cancer? Absolutely not. That's ridiculous. We've all seen situations like that. It hits close to home or your community so you help. That's what good people do.

there's nothing wrong with helping that little girl. if we ALL helped those around us who we affected then we'd be helping all of them - so the "charity" issue is moot.

Sawyer, would you be this upset if it happened to a player at Mizzou? I seriously doubt it.

This subject has lost it's meaning somewhere along the line! I think what Saywer is saying is somewhat legit - his delivery was awful. Let's all give what we can when we can! It all helps out!

Marcus Denmon's cousin was murdered less than two months ago. Jonathan Underwood left the team to go be with his family as his brother was on his death bed with cancer.

We've dealt with tragedy in Columbia this year, too. A lot of Mizzou fans wondered about helping cover the funeral expenses for Denmon's cousin. I wasn't an advocate of that, either.

I'm not upset about this anyway. I just happen to think there are an unfortunately high number of kids in her same situation who need the help much more. The NCAA has rules against student-athletes getting benefits that aren't afforded to non-student-athletes, and IMO people should follow that guideline with charity, as well. Help those who don't have athletic siblings, too, and if you're not doing that then you're doing this for the wrong reasons.

Wrong. The NCAA is the governing body for college athletics. The organization is set up to serve student athletes.
That's like saying The Jimmy V Foundation isn't doing it's part because it's only concerned with Cancer and not AIDS patients as well.

You know the NCAA has never been about serving student-athletes in this capacity.

The NCAA's mission is to protect the rights of student-athletes and preserve the integrity of competition.

This is true, it was well publicized. The media immediately vilified the guy that had only spent like 25 dollars of his own money and raised the other 5k so the kid could have a proper burial. The person that raised the money was called a booster and accused of basically providing illegal benefits to a dead kid. The kids name was Herman Micthell.

It's ok for Mr Newton to solicit 180k though.

Were you that guy?

I remember you being intimately involved in the situation and posting about it on OUI.

Anyway, this SHOULD NOT be an NCAA violation, but I am about 100% positive that it is. There have been many situations similar to this that the NCAA has not allowed school or booster donations to good causes.

"I can't help them all, but I can help this one."

A common reason behind adoption.

Nothing wrong with KU helping this one.

ncaa is a bunch of jackasses. nuff said. still pissed about the Herman Mitchell crap. "booster" my ass.

That was a terrible deal with Herman Mitchell. Very sad and it's too bad he never had the chance to get to OU.

Not much else to say on the T. Robinson subject....right is right.

Exactly. And if everyone would take this approach we would have no kids without a home (except in Missouri of course) and 49 states would be a better place.
