Full disclosure, I'm a UConn fan first and foremost. I'm also a fan of WCBB generally, and particularly OU. I love Sherri and have read and enjoyed this board for a couple of years. I haven't felt compelled to register and post until I read this one.
Yes, Geno loves shooters. I wish there were more college coaches who love shooters like Geno does. As Geno often says, the objective is to put the ball in the basket, hence the name of the game. Texas shot less than 30% last night and it wasn't all about Baylor's defense.
I really don't understand the suggestion that Lexi is not big on playing hard defensively and that's okay with Geno but not Mulkey. If Lexi doesn't play hard defensively she won't play at UConn. From what I've been told she understands that. Every year UConn is one of the best defensive teams in the country and players quickly learn that there are two ends of the court. Lou Samuelson earned the reputation as a great shooter and poor defender and she's grown tremendously on defense this season. The reality is that very, very few high school players are good defenders.
Finally, a few words on Mosqueda-Lewis. Saying that shooting is all she really did misrepresents her college career. She developed in to an outstanding rebounder as a guard and also was an excellent passer. Although never a great defender, her defense improved considerably during her career. She was an All-American and 3-time national champion. Her biggest issue now, as a professional, is her lack of fitness. She played sparingly as a rookie for Seattle and certainly was disappointed. If she ever commits fully to dropping pounds and becoming quicker, she'll become a better defender and a very good professional player. I hope that happens because the game needs shooters.
Apologies for the long post but felt a need to respond.
Welcome to the board. The other thing that has impressed me with Geno, is he may be the best fundamental coach in the Women's game. Very few coaches stress using the glass from the angle, and he is a master. I have had the pleasure of watching UCONN's pre-game warm ups 4 time live over the years, and his kids know how to shoot off the glass. I wish we did. 10 and 12 foot jumpers using the back board is becoming a lost art.
