MBB Transfer Portal Thread: Moser Year 4

Do you have to develop HS kids anymore? I want it to be that way and I think it’s the long-term answer, but seems like most teams are turning over half their roster every year. Maybe if you are blue-blood you can afford to do it, but mid-level teams……maybe this has or is changing
Well you certainly never have to redshirt anyone ever again.

I wouldn't go that far, but definitely seems like Cooper is scared of competition. He decides to wait till the deadline to enter the portal? What's changed from the end of the season to now? He saw his three main competitors for minutes (Oweh, Uzan, and Javian) all transfer. If he didn't have belief in the coaching staff cause of his playing time as a freshman, well, nothing has changed from the end of the season to today about that. If he's not leaving for NIL, then the only thing that's changed is bringing in Elvis, Goodine, and Jones. And as someone who isn't a proven commodity, doesn't make sense to wait till the end of the portal window when teams have filled out a lot of their roster. He's probably just looking for sure fire playing time, and best of luck to him.

That's exactly what I've said as well...totally agree. What's changed, besides the added players? And another poster brought up a good point...if some of these players already on the roster are irritated by the amount of NIL some of the new guys are getting...how does that factor in? I was exaggerating with the p.... comment, but I do feel competition is part of his decision, otherwise he would have already entered.

I agree with your assessment about Moser and last year. But, there is no use speculating why Cooper is transferring. It could be for a myriad of reasons. It seemed like he was involved early on in the recruitment process, but then something changed. Who knows what it could be. Where he ends up will tell us alot.
I agree, it’s ridiculous for people to speculate and just assert that he is a baby who doesn’t want to compete for playing time. There are tons of potential reasons. And people bashing him to try to give cover to the grown man paid millions to lead the program is silly.

That just means it’s an opportunity for him. He has an opportunity to showcase his talent, and when things fall apart next year, set himself up for a larger payday.
Why waste a full season of eligibility on a sinking ship? This season was already a loss for him. And I suspect plenty of good programs will be interested in him right now.

Cooper was the biggest cheerleader all season. He acted like a good teammate and always had the right attitude, outwardly anyway.

So, another school tampered with him (unlikely) or he felt like he wasn’t going to play.

It's only a wasted season if he can't beat out Elvis, Jones, and Goodine for significant PT.

I think it's the latter.

Elvis commits....Kaden seemed fine.

Then came Jones and/or Goodine....and talk of wanting to add yet another guard/wing type (the timing with Jordan Ivy-Curry's name being floated out there matches?)...boom goes the dynamite.

At least that's my read. May be wrong.

Kentucky and Kansas State still have plenty of spots to fill. What are the odds that Cooper ends up at one of those places?

It’s laughable. Nothing worse than fans who bash kids who transfer out but welcome incoming transfers with open arms. I guess Spangler is a pussy or else he would have stuck it out in Spokane.

Honestly, Cooper would have been crazy to stay. What reason did he have to stay around and play for a program where he won’t make the tourney, knowing things are only getting worse, and his coach is likely done after the season? This season was the best chance Moser will have to get to the tournament. Our four main transfers have all been picked up by quality programs. He had all of them and Moore and Waldo on the same roster and won two games all season against tourney teams. A freaking miserable coaching job on his part. Now he won’t have nearly as much talent and will be lucky to match the 15-18 record from two years ago. It’s inconceivable that there are still some people who act like all of this is beyond his control.
I respect most of your points including not liking porter, but do you not think you take it to far when you say Cooper would be crazy to stay? That is more than just a comment on mosier, it’s a comment on an OU program you say you support. Not saying you cannot be negative about direction of program, I am too. But saying player is crazy to want to play for OU is insulting. Just like players leaving have many reasons, players choosing to play at OU do as well.

This seems by far the most likely. Just sad, as he was one of the few potential glimmers of hope. Those guys probably have better seasons than him, but there's a lot less to dream on.

I guess my response would be, what positives can you point to in the program right now? What do we have going for us? Just missed the tourney with his best roster, and has since lost basically all that talent while missing on every main target. Combine that with his lack of playing time, and I honestly can’t think of any significant reason he would have to stay.

Yes.

I'd say it's the blue bloods and those with money that can stock their team via the Portal. If OU isn't going to have a high-functioning NIL, we have to get them out of HS and develop/keep them. We can't buy them, right? We can all agree on that.

Or he lost faith in the program/HC. Not saying that to be hateful, but Cooper wasn't blind to how the offseason was going. Miss on three big in-state targets. Probably some combination of seeing that struggle, maybe not loving things about Moser, and maybe not seeing or having a clear understanding of his role next year. Moser is in full panic mode, I'm sure it's tough to tell Cooper what will be expected of him next year with such an open roster at this point.

This seems like the most reasonable take.
