Misunderstood rules

Players with a reputation seem never to have a call for the little shuffle that they do before driving, a shuffle that does lift the pivot foot.

The biggest problem is that officials are so inconsistent in applying the rues. Both in different games, and even at different moments in the same game.

I think the fact is that the fans know the rules well enough to know that they are not always administered correctly or evenly.

I may be old school, but when I see a player carrying the ball while running and taking 4 or 5 steps with it - it is traveling in my book. I saw a Texas guard cross the lane in 4 steps - on the run- and make a layup vs OU in the last game. No call. The guard looked like a football tailback running with the ball tucked under her arm.

They were certainly calling Niang for it when Iowa St was playing Kansas recently. But you're right, it doesn't get called nearly as often as it should.

Anyone remember the official named NightTrain Lane who used to officiate high school games in the Tulsa area? I always loved to see him officiate games because he was a stickler for the fundamentals. Sloppy players (and their coaches) hated to see him call their games.

They certainly called WV for shuffling tonight.

I thought Dick "Night Train" Lane was a cornerback for the Detroit Lions in the fifties?

Night Train was this guys nickname. He was a teacher in Tulsa, if I remember correctly.
