Enjoy the kid while you can

We can't live in hindsight, but Ryan Minor returning for his senior year was clearly a mistake. I don't think he would have been a lottery pick in the 1995 NBA Draft, but there is a zero question he would have been a 1st round pick. He wound up being drafted fairly early in the second round in 1996, but there was a clear drop-off in his play during his senior season. As such, it negatively impacted his draft position. He wound up focusing on baseball and became the answer to a trivia question. Had he left for the NBA after his junior season, he would have at least been GUARANTEED a 3-year multi-million-dollar contract as a 1st round pick. 2nd round picks are guaranteed nothing. I always felt bad for him for making that decision since it cost him 7-figures...not something many of us on this board would pass up.

how about living in reality?
the reality is he was drafted 2nd round and had zero success....which tells me he did not have nba talent.
the jr. year projections were clearly pipe dreams. he would likely have been exposed in pre-draft workouts....
i was alive and followed ou basketball pretty closely myself. but i don't remember his reasons for returning.
did he get a poor draft grade? did they even do those kinds of things back then? i don't remember.

Hopefully, all of us on here are living in reality. NBA Draft busts happen, and he likely would have been a bust had he entered the 1995 Draft as a 1st round pick - but he would have gotten PAID...something that did not happen since he waited a year. You have to remember that back then not everyone went right to the NBA. Heck, Tim Duncan stayed 4 years at Wake Forest...could have left at any time. Also, high school players could also go directly to the NBA back then. Do you remember a guy by the name of Felipe Lopez? He was about the same age as Ryan Minor. He likely would have been a lottery pick had he entered the NBA draft after his high school career...wound up playing 4 years at St Johns because he wasn't good enough to play in the League...but would have at least gotten paid. Things like that happen from time to time.

maybe they were wrong.
you don't just magically lose your nba talent.
Lol this is very naive.. are you being serious? You don't think fit/culture/coach/cast/luck factor in at all and instead it's all a binary, you either have nba talent or dont?

I'm much happier he's playing his way into the lottery because he'll be OU's legacy going forward. OU would not be able to keep a player like him next year so this is best case scenario for this program and fan base especially as a recruiting tool. Illinois really, really fed this up not making sure he made it their campus no matter the circumstances.
This and Tiny's post afterward, are why WE NEED HIM TO GO PRO. otherwise, he'll be kansas's legacy

Wolf is 68th on the updated ESPN draft big board and Goldin doesn’t even make the list (which includes 100 players). Fears is the only certain NBA player from last night’s game. Goldin may have had a chance a generation ago, but not now. He has attempted two 3s in his career and is a mediocre free throw shooter. Think of it this way: Hunter Dickinson is a much better college player and has almost no chance of playing in the NBA.

Maybe him playing poorly against Bama (like everyone else on the team) may help drop his draft stock, so we can afford to keep him.
