Mount St. Mary freshman Kennedy Allison threw her hands up in frustration as she headed to the bench.
Clinging to a two-point lead early in the third quarter against Kellyville, Allison drove to the basket when a Kellyville defender slid into her path to draw an offensive foul, her fourth of the game.
Allison had scored 14 of the Rockets' 28 points at that point, but coach Parker Cassell had faith in his senior leaders to step up.
The next 10 minutes would reward that faith as the Rockets went on a 20-5 run behind the play of seniors Mattie Rischard, Mikayla Young and Carmen Kinsey to upend Kellyville 58-44 in a Class 3A regional tournament.
“We have a bunch of girls that just step up time after time,” Cassell said. “It’s a great luxury when things aren’t going exactly how we want them to turn to our senior point guard and put the ball in her hands.”
Allison finished with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Rischard added 15 points and five assists and Young chipped in 11 points, three steals and four rebounds.
The win advances Mount St. Mary to a Monday night showdown at Prague against the winner of No. 3 Prague.
