We have 2 flaws it seems to me. First, we are flawed in that we don't have a 4 (e.g. Thompson, rush, hill or McFarland). We play a 1 in/4 out scheme, and our 1s don't rebound very well. JMO, but the only 2 girls that fit the size and athletic ability of a 4 (Kellogg and Gibbs) just aren't two of our better players at this point. So, I don't know what you do. Second, we just aren't shooting the ball from the 3 like I thought we would. We shoot the 3s, we just don't hit them with regularity. So, IMO, we will need to figure out how to play around these deficiencies, to be successful.
And then overall, and let me say I know I unfairly castigate some of the players by saying this, but this is the first lazy team of the Coale era. Plain and simple, the team is lazy. They don't get beat to loose balls, --- they don't even attempt to get them. They don't even attempt simple defensive rotations until it is to late to get there, and play defense with their hands instead of their feet and mind (anticipation and understanding).
They "participate" in the game. To be good, you have to play with an intensity and focus. While some have focused on turnovers and lack of rebounding or whatever when assessing Sherri's coaching, I usually judge a coach by the effort their team gives, and if you go by that issue, she is the best in the business. This is the main reason I have always supported her. Normally, her teams play like they are underwater and have 20 ft to get to the surface and don't have much air left, -- almost a panic adrenaline rush level of effort.
This team is the opposite. I dont' have any idea why that is. Every coach every day at every level tries to find a way to get their team to play with intensity and edge. It isn't easy. And every coach has had a team show up without the energy, focus and intensity for a game. It happens. For this OU team and for whatever reason, it is a too common occurrence.
Great teams are great in "transition". Some think of fast break basketball as transition basketball. Actually, the transition is the moment or instant in time between one duty and another. Transition is the moment or instant in time when you transition from being a defender to a rebounder, or an offensive player to a defensive player, or a screener to a cutter etc. We are too slow in transition. For example, Williams takes a defensive position and puts her hands up to properly create a vertical obstacle to a players driving in the post, and she is still standing there with her hands up while the ball has been shot, come off the rim and 3 Baylor girls, farther from the basket than her, have moved inside her for a easy put back. Successful play depends upon her transition from defender to rebounder. This requires effort and anticipation (mental effort and focus). I don't mean to get on KK, that was just an example.
Hopefully, we are playing people close and hopefully we find some answers and chemistry that allow us to improve and get there this year. If not, then we will really need to get to work being with the next off season.
