Najera Honored at NCAA Celebration of Champions

Eduardo Najera was and still is one of my all-time favorite Sooners. Talk about a high-energy player! Eddie wrote the book. He wasn’t always the most talented or skilled player on the floor, but no one worked harder. I wish you young guys could have seen him play.

Absolutely true! No one ever had to remind Eddie to hustle. He rode his reputation as a tough as nails player to a twelve years career in the NBA.

Najera will always set the bar for playing with great effort. One of my favorites and really epitomized what Sampson wanted out of his players. OU vs. Mizzu, Najera's sophomore yr? Eddie attempted to stop a fast break dunk from behind. He was winding up before 3/4 court and missed the swat landing a cranium crackin closeline to the guy. It took no easy layups to a different level.


Do you guys remember when Kenyon Martin and Cincinnati came to Norman?
Intimidating team and Martin was beastly. He had a scary presence and freaky pre-injury athleticism. If I remember correctly he took it to us that night.
I was at that game and couldn't believe how much bigger he looked compared to our guys and Najera. Kenyon was listed at 6'9'' but he seemed much larger in person.

Iowa State has had some of those guys over the years as well. Marcus Fizer was a guy you had to do double take. Dude looked massive on the court but could move pretty well. I thought he'd do better in the NBA. Fizer still has Royce White beat but Calvin Cato had a longer NBA career over both.
