NCAA Violation

It's easy to go 20-12 or 16-14 and go to the NIT without $100 handshakes.

So are you OK with your kid cheating on a test in order to get a higher grade? Other kids cheat..... You can't have it both ways either.

We struggle to get to 20 wins WITH $100 handshakes.

No. I hold my kids, myself, etc., to higher standards than I do people I don't know.

This thread has made me lose my faith in our fanbase. Geez. Some of you guys ...

Of course it SHOULD be different. But it's not. We have to play within the rules. If others don't, then fine. We'll lose (as you say, which I disagree with) ... I'd rather be a bad basketball team and be proud of my school for doing things the right way than i would win.

Bottom line.

For you that condone breaking the rules to be competitive, that eats away at the very fabric of the game you love. If the rules stink, change them fairly ... don't break them unfairly.

AAU programs have made this sport VERY dirty. That's the bottom line. It's why I don't live and die by college basketball anymore. It's too dirty.

I hold high standards for OU and almost consider them family. I know them. They are my alma mater. My oldest son's, too. I served on the Electrical Engineering & Computer Science advisory board for 10 years. I was also on the MIS advisory board. I'm proud to be an OU alum.

I also understand HS and AAU basketball. Like Ada and a couple of others on here, I refereed for many, many years. I remember one summer Saturday in Houston, calling 12 straight AAU games in 100 degree heat when another referee didn't show up..... 15 straight hours. I knew the coaches (AAU, HS, and D1) and many of the players.

I don't think AAU ball is nearly as dirty as you make it out to be. There are some. I've seen some D1 coaches quit recruiting a player who was on the take. Word gets around if a kid has his hand out or has a street agent.

I'll go back to my expectations for OU athletics. I expect OU to run a clean, ethical program. Period. I violently disagree with your quote " We've NEVER had a "clean" program". I think Lon Kruger runs one now. I also think you can run a program the right way and have a winning record.

I choose to be a "glass half full" guy.

I think the problem is not that OU should break or bend the rules, the problem is the NCAA has been letting teams off ( or with a wrist slap) when they break or bend the rules, so it has become to common place.

There needs to be set penalties that are enforced both for the coach, player and institution. Examples - If a player takes cash no matter how much its a certain game suspension. 2nd time gone from NCAA. School on probation. Happens under a coach 2 times in 5 years coach is banned for the NCAA for 5 years.

I know its hard to discover these things. But if you can get a few with hard punishments, it will not stop cheating, but lessen it

The NCAA has let to many side circumstances get in the way of a penalty. Such as Auburn quarterback that dad was asking for money and he was not penalized due to the player not knowing. That cannot happen. Set rules. This happened this is the consequence.

Even if you're right, I can't allow what amounts to unsupported rumors about the program to go unchecked. I have little doubt that what Yo Yo did and worse has been part of the very fabric of college basketball at some schools for decades, but I firmly believe that Lon Kruger has run a clean program since he arrived at OU. Please let this go and don't bring it up again. Thank you. -- AdaSooner

You guys that are saying you would be happy if we were squeaky clean and going to the NIT need to really be honest with yourselves. Every Sooner fan around was calling for Capel's head because we were losing. Now, Lon has us back and everyone is happy again but just remember where we have been. The bottom line is nobody is happy when you are losing. Just win baby. Just go through the past coaches and tell me one that was squeaky clean. Capel (Nope), Sampson (Lol), Tubbs (Yeah right). In my opinion, we should be doing more for the players at OU since our bball fans suck so bad. It's honestly embarrassing for these kids to be playing in front of so few fans at home. If you want top players to come to OU, you have to take care of them. They would be taken care of at other schools for sure. For you guys that evidently have lived a sin free life, I view $100 handshakes like when your parents came to visit you at college. You were broke, eating ramen noodles every night, and that extra tank of gas they provided or spending money really helped you out. In a time where the institutions, television companies, and NCAA are making all this money, $100 handshakes are nothing to report.
