Nebraska Alum Buys Full Page Ad Blasting School's Committment To Basketball

Based on the title of this thread, I thought I was going to read a tirade from an NU fan who felt they were spending too much on basketball.

The most surprising thing to me was that Northwestern spends more than Michigan state.

I would think the Northwestern amount is so elevated by the tuition for scholarships. Isn't that included in the expense? And Northwestern, by being a private school, would have much higher tuition costs over the rest of the public institutions.

I guess I didn't reallize that anyone in Nebraska had EVER cared about basketball before!

That must be it.

I thought those names to which the letter was addressed were fake. "Barfknecht"?

That is a funny last name, but it's his name. He's a journalist with either the Lincoln or Omaha paper. I think his first name is Lee (Barfknecht).

I liked the letter and he makes some good points. KSU went out and hired Huggins, when nobody wanted him and he brought the recruiter from Maryland and Frank Martin with him. Frank has led KSU to 5 straight 20 win seasons, and probably 5 straight NCAA tourney appearances with an elite 8 and an eyelash away from a final 4.

Before KSU did that, they were in the dumps in basketball. They had some tradition but I don't think that factored into their quick rise very much.

That year that they had the really good womens basketball team they had a good fan showing. Then again, I've heard that they are really supportive of their volleyball team, so it might have been a natural transition from volleyball to women's basketball.

:D And then, OU got grouped in the same bracket as them and Kentucky took care of them so we we could beat up on Kentucky to make a second consecutive Final Four. Go Sooners! :D

The difference in tuition for Northwestern vs. Michigan State accounts for only a fraction of the difference. For the $2 million difference to be all from tuition, Northwestern would have to cost about $150,000 more per year to attend (actual tuition at Northwestern is closer to $40-50k).

I would guess Northwestern's 2010 number is for some reason higher than normal (arena construction, new coach or something... I don't pay attention to their program, but I'm sure there's something). No way they spend that much annually with the results they've been getting.

Nebraska's never going to get the kind of commitment this guy is seeking, and even if they do, it won't come in time to save Doc Sadler. The guy is a pretty good coach, but he's trying to out-Big 10 the rest of the Big 10, and it's not going to work. If I'm Nebraska's AD, I try to find someone like Mike Anderson who will take a completely different approach than the rest of that conference.
