No Shaka Smart

If this guy coached for, say, Iona or SIU, you guys would be all over him. So what he happens to coach at VCU? His guys play hard, good defense, and a style of basketball hard to game plan for.

He's probably out of OU's reach now. No argument about his ability.

Say we hire Shaka as our next coach. Most everyone agrees that the next coach should have connections to the recruiting hotbeds of Texas and prolly the JUCO's in Kansas. From what I see or hear....Smart has neither of these. Would the hiring of assistants with these connections be enough to make the necessary inroads in recruiting that we need. No doubt the dude can coach.

Not going for a guy like Shaka has more to do with human nature than anything else. Joe C just had to fire his pick from last time from VCU. He is not going to turn around and go back to select the next young coach from there even though they may be worlds apart as coaches.

How much do you think OU will pay? the max?

Opinions, Opinions, identification and projection. Everyone is absolutely sold on Brad Stevens being the greatest thing since sliced bread. Shaka has a very solid resume but perceptions of his greatness are far from unanimious.

Doesn't matter much about any of these guys - including Buzz Williams - if they do not reciporcate the adulation. And, if they don't reciporcate, I won't lose one millisecond of sleep over it.

Some of our fanbase is highly delusional. Fans would have much greater potential sway if they actually showed up and supported the team. Threatening to "sit out" next season if you don't get the coach of your wet dreams is laughable. I suspect that for everyone that does this there will be multiples of others who will come out and end their hibernation. Our apathetic fanbase does not help us recruit good players nor do they enhance the attractiveness of our job to coaching candidates. An OU BB fan claiming that they will sit out next year is no different than they guy or gal who doesn't vote then complains about who gets elected and that no politican listens to them.

At the end of the day we all have an opinion - some more narrowly focused than others. None of us will get to make the call nor do any of us (certainly not many) have any special insight into making an intelligent evaluation of a coaches potential. And, yes, it is more complicated than simply looking at wins and losses at their current institution.

My biggest concern about our search is that we seem to have narrowed down way to early on one guy - Buzz. JC who is normally button lipped has had enough leaks from his inner circle to drain the kool aid pitcher about his fascination with and focus on Buzz. I sure hope that it has been a smokescreen and that we have quietly worked the channels for other outstanding candidates. I would love to get Buzz. However, he is not the only good fish in the sea and if you take him at his post-loss spoken word, you might get the impression that he used the back channels to express interest in us to up the ante for his services at Marquette.

I will get excited when some outstanding candidate(s) show us some love. I will become ecstatic when one signs. I will ardently support whomever OU hires and, in addition to donating to the football program, I will now support the basketball program.

Go Sooners!
