No surprise here...

I only saw the final 45 seconds of OT, so I don't know anything about the end of regulation, but I sat watching in disbelief as Elijah Johnson dribbled past ISU defenders who had clearly thrown in the towel, dunked it with relish and celebrated afterward as if he'd scored the winning points.

So low class.

I think ISU should save all the 3s for their next home game......against OSU. Don't bring that shooting to Norman.

I went to the KU official site, the ISU official site, ESPN, Fox Sports and CBS Sports. None of the box scores have the names of the officials. How convenient.....

personally, i actually can live with no call block/charge on niang, because he started falling back before the contact. and that's based on how i usually see it called. the bad call imo was when they were on the floor, the ref calls the foul for a hold from behind and can't see that niang got all ball. oh well, helps us in the standings if we tcb.

msproud, bert smith is the one official who deserves the ire.

ISU absolutely had that game stolen from them by the refs, but I don't see how you can criticize Elijah Johnson's dunk. He owned ISU for 45 minutes and was really the only reason KU had a chance to get the game handed to them by the refs at the end of regulation. You can't tell me you'd pass up on that dunk if you were in his shoes. He's a 22 year old kid.

To his credit, Johnson said in an interview just aired on ESPN that he shouldn't have dunked it at the end, that he demonstrated poor sportsmanship in doing so (and Self reportedly told him as much right after he did it). He seemed sincere in regretting his actions, I have to say, so there's that.

And yes, that was an obvious charge just before the end of regulation; I finally got to see it. The sideline reporter didn't ask Self about that call, of course.

Here's how regulation ended.
KU down 2, has to foul. Withey is the only player within 10 to 15 feet of the ball handler, he fouls him. It's Withey's 5th foul, he's gone.
BUT WAIT. The refs credit the foul to another player 15 feet away.

Then, KU down 2 with 5 seconds or so to go. Johnson drives. Niang sets up tent in the paint. Standing still with his arms straight up for seconds. Johnson jumps RIGHT into him. Misses the shot. Both guys crash to the ground. No whistle. Ball bounces around. Johnson rolls over on top of Niang, grabs it. Then rolls over on top of him the OTHER direction to pass it out to a teammate.

Niang is called for a foul. Johnson hits both FTS, OT.

It was good of Johnson to apologize in his interview. I will give him a pass on the end of the game dunk since it was a sincere apology.

I see dozens of players pass up that dunk in that situation literally every single day watching college basketball...

KU brings their own "Hilton Magic" with them....their own referees.

He's a 22-year-old man who's been playing basketball for years. Players pass up late dunks all the time when they have the game won and the other team has obviously given up; why should he be any different?

Ironic how when its your team its called an amazing come back with the players never quiting and making the plays at the end, but when its the traditional power in the conference its called a conspiracy, or a major screw job just happend. KU made some big time 3s and ISU missed a big free throw and did not get a couple of big defensive rebounds in the last 40 seconds. Not to mention they got got dominated in overtime.

boomer, 99% of the time I am right behind you towing that line, but you must have missed the end of regulation: ISU got screwed. Sure KU hit some shots, but the refs put them in a position to send it to overtime with inept calls.

Not to mention KU had an ineligible player playing all of OT.

No doubt you can credit the Kansas players for stepping up and making the plays when they were given the opportunity.

The problem is that they were given the opportunity.

I knew they didn't have specific conference officials as they do in football but I didn't know officials were "contracted" out. I know officiating is not easy, but for clearly blown calls or no calls they should face some sort of reprimand other than "not getting future assignments". There were several calls that went against Iowa State this game. As Fran Fran said, something should have been called under the basket whether it was a block or a charge.

The officiating must have been worse than it looked on TV for commentators stray from the company line.

To me the really bad call was giving the foul to the non-Withey player. On the no-call charge, it looked to me like the ISU player guarding Johnson on that drive was fouling him all the way up until he runs into Niang. The officiating was really bad. The refs seem to be really whistle happy in the Big 12.

Good no call on the charge. The ISU player clearly takes two steps to the right after Johnson has already picked up his dribble.

You can see it in slow motion here
