Not so fast my friend

Let's assume that you are correct, and this roster simply doesn't have the talent to go Dancing. I still expect an OU team that plays hard for 40 minutes. I still expect an OU team that has a clue on offense. If guys aren't hitting shots, run sets for other guys. If nobody can make a jumper, set multiple screens for Fitz. Find SOMETHING that works. I expect an OU team that plays hard-nosed, team defense. We are brutal on defense, and have trended that way since Capel's first year. I expect an OU team that fights for defensive rebounds. Cam? LOL. That is ridiculous. He'd be sitting if I were coach. Forget the fast break points, and send 5 guys to the D-boards if you have to. I expect players on an OU team that work hard. Our team captain hasn't played in a month b/c he won't put forth effort on defense. Why let him stick around and bring the other players down, ala TMG. I expect improvement from players, especially the younger ones. I know a lot of folks like to say that they see this, but I really don't.

I just don't feel like Capel is getting the most of this team. If this team was playing up to their potential, IMO, I'd only be bashing Capel for his recruiting/talent evaluation.

Capel is the worst coach in the big 12. Please tell me who he is better than.

I will be content with whatever Joe C decides is best for the University and the team. Losing always makes people unhappy and unhappy people want to lash out and change anything to try to make the losing go away. Sometimes that emotional response is correct and sometimes it is wrong. Ergo the screams of some OU supporters wanting Sunny Golloway fired.

So I choose to wait as along as possible before calling for the head of a coach. Once you want him fired and he isn't, you become a weak supporter or antagonist to the team. Some people become so interested in being right about their earlier judgment about a coach that they secretly hope the team loses even bigger than before so their judgment will be proven right.

I choose not to put myself in that position. I choose to always root for and support my Sooner teams and their coaches. It is a choice.

The exception to my above personal rule is when a coach cheats, commits a crime, gets drunk on the job, or lies so often you can't trust anything he says.

After all that, losing sucks. And we had better start winning next year whoever our coach is.

The mayor. We took this team and beat him on his home court. Do not confuse this response as an endorsement.

Good post. I think the part that confuses me the most is when folks think that posters are loyally choosing a coach over the program. I was a diehard fan of OU basketball well before Coach Capel came here and I will still be a diehard long after he is gone.

jerry,

Thanks for the honest response.

abd,

Fair points. I'm curious as to who you think would want to come here and save OU basketball at this point. We are already a huge mess and a shell or what we were three years ago. We have no fan support, an outdated arena, and are competing for fans with the most exciting young NBA franchise in the league (not to mention a darn good women's program). I think one would have to be very careful in unloading Coach Capel and make sure the next guy brought in had the credentials, desire, and grit to get us back to where we belong.

In other words, its not that easy to just dump Capel and find the right person anxiously waiting to be the white knight of the program.

I will always be a loyal guy to the program.

Sometimes there exists just a bad situation that needs a reboot. Happens all the time in the NFL to really good coaches (e.g., Shanahan, Fisher, etc.) As much as I like Capel as a coach and person, this is one of those scenarios. Too much is broken.

I've yet to see a single substantive report that intimates Goff is having academic issues, until I do, I will assume he is not.

This is the same thing other posters said last year when I was warning that TMG wasn't coming back after the season was over, and that Tiny wouldn't be back. Both bits of info I gleaned from good sources who were right in the end.

So, just because you don't see a substantive report doesn't mean it's not true. This probably won't come out until after the semester is over anyway.

this is true.

How would it come out before the semester is done if it is an academic issue?
All you have heard is from a "source" that he isn't going to class.

We were planning on doing an interview with Goff after his JUCO season ended. I'll see if we can't track him down a bit early. I haven't heard anything regarding the issue but that doesn't mean that it isn't true.

I'm not on the fire Capel bandwagon yet. Look, does this suck? Absolutely. I've personally invested a lot of time and effort into Oklahoma basketball during the past six plus years. I think the program deserves better. It sickens me to watch us become doormats.

But c'mon. What did you people expect? I didn't hear anybody saying this during the four game conference winning streak (besides jerry). Sam made a great post during that streak that I have bumped several times warning posters to not get too high and not get too low this year.

How many of you predicted us to win five or more conference games after the Chaminade loss? (We are beating little brother on senior night. book it.) Judging by the polls and posts during that time...not many.

I wanted this team to play as a team, compete, stay out of trouble, and play hard on defense, and for the most part during this conference season, I feel like they have. Obviously what happened in Lubbock wasn't the case, but I don't think many of you can deny that this team has played hard this season. I didn't feel this way last year.

Capel should get another year. He's got Osby. He's got Goff (who for whatever reason many of you can't understand that he is coming in here next year to be a valuable defensive post player option). I betcha he lands a point guard and another big. I also bet that the fellas work extremely hard this offseason (led by Osby).

This is Capel's mess, but we knew that coming into this season. He knew it. You knew it. Joe knew it. Its all about next year. Make it to the dance or I'll be the guy leading the charge for his head using my red wig as torch fuel....

Thanks for your time.

No thanks

Yes sir. No one called for Capel's head when Blake was here, either, but that is kind of the point. Circumstances change.

Honestly I go back and forth depending on the time of the day, for many of the reasons Big Time laid out, but if we lose the next two games I don't see how anyone could credibly argue that it is clearly the wrong decision to fire Capel. He would have earned it. The "records" he has racked up at Oklahoma are almost impossible to wrap your head around.

The hiring and firing of a coach shouldn't (and won't) depend on what he has earned or not. It will depend on what is best for the program it that particular time.

The questions that Joe C will have to satisfy in this process are

1) Can we get a better coach right now?
2) Can we afford to buy out his contract and pay for a quality new coach?
3) Can we afford to have more players split, as always happens when there is a coaching change?
4) Has he lost confidence in Capel's ability to move this program forward?

You don't fire a coach unless you are certain you can do better (unless there are legal/ethical issues involved of course). If Joe C. has a short list of quality coaches who are willing to take the job, I say do it ASAP and move on. But it's not always that simple.

This isn't a defense of Capel. He is a big boy and understands the nature of his profession. Losing causes this. If he goes, I won't shed a tear for him. He'll be fine. If he stays, then I'll assume that is because he is our best option at this point in time.

Bigtime, its clear you must be a young guy with tons of passion and have grown fond of coach Capel as a person. This is a business, Capel has run the business into the ground.
As Gordon Gecko said "don't get emotional about your money".

Look at it from the perspective as a board member reviewing the CEO's last 5 year performance of any business.

Previous last 2 CEO's had a top 100 company.

Last 5 years: Revenue down
Brand identity: lowest since 1976
Attendance: at a all time low
Recent results last 29 conference games: 6-23
Roster: worst in the big 12 today, not much better next year
Post season last 2 years: No
Program respect: Zero
Capel's respect among AAU coaches: None
Respect from the Zebra's: Zero
Potential NCAA issues from previous assistant coach: Possible
Outlook for 2011: Dismal

If I was a shareholder I would vote to fire. Why do you want to give another chance to a person that destroyed the company? As a stockholder I have zero confidence in this CEO's ability to make the company a winner. If this was a public company the stock would be down 75%.
Remember what Gordon Gecko said.

Just because TMG & Tiny didn't come back doesnt mean that these rumors are or are not accurate. Sorry your good sources err message board posts are not sufficient.
