what happens? I am assuming that she would have started. Who starts in her place? It looks like Sherri has more than one option.

I don't know that I had thought of OU as having five starters at this point. I kind of thought we had:
Aaryn
Nicole Griffin
Morgan Hook

Then, I thought we had Kaylon, Nicole Kornet, Maddie, and Sharane rotating depending on the make-up of the opponent. I still think that is very likely, but with Gioya substituting for Maddie. The players, and even Sherri, are mentioning Dales when they speak of Gioya, just like they did with Maddie.

I like this starting lineup:

PG: Morgan
SG: Aaryn
SF: Sharane
PF: Kornet
C: Kaylon

But, I think Sherri may go with...

Morgan
Aaryn
Sharane
Kornet
Griffin

Pretty sure the starters to begin the year will be Morgan, Aaryn, Sharane, and the two Nicoles. Kaylon will be the 4/5 main reserve and get some starts against bigger teams but regardless she will get 20+ minutes. Shaya/Portia will get some reserve minutes at 4/5. Nicole K should get some minutes on the wing. Edwards will now get minutes as the backup point guard. I would expect Carter and Wyatt to both get a shot as reserves on the wing. Still kind of hoping Gibbs gets redshirted...really like her athletic ability but she is raw with her basketball skill and needs some time to develop.

Norm - really think Nicole G will be helped by the new emphasis on the rules...she looked good with her shot/post moves.

I prefer this starting lineup
Vegas
Hook
Campbell or Kornet
Kaylon
Griffin

then bring in
Campbell or Kornet as your versatile sixth player.

I agree that I think the new rules will help Griffin. I also think they will help Aaryn, and they will give an edge to Kornet vs Kaylon. I wonder if they won't also give an advantage to the OU recruits, all of whom seem to have good hands and feet.

Sherri said that teams will have to learn to play defense with their feet. That is important. I wonder if that won't hurt WV, A&M, and ----Odyssey Sims. Sims is a better guard than she thinks, but she will have to get over that desire to mug dribblers to learn that.

I haven't seen Gioya, but Sherri keeps talking about her, and Cloman mentioned her as the best of the freshmen.

I doubt the new rules will help Griffin much, if any. She is not an aggressive player and is content to stay out of the way. It should help Sharane who loves to penetrate and Aaryn and Morgan to perhaps a lesser degree.

I think the new rules will hurt us as much as they will hurt us.

Should be interesting to see who plays. I think a freshman steps up and plays a lot.

This is really to bad! I thought Manning was one of the 3 players on our roster who could have played in the WNBA one day.. This is a set back but when she does come back her IQ will be so strong. With this injury I think Carter will have a good year, Campbell should also start at the 3 now for sure

Hook
Aaryn
Campbell
kornet?
Griffin

I like Atlanta's lineup but then I'm a KayKay fan.

We're a perimeter shooting team. These rules are a huge help for us. I think it's like we recruited knowing these rules were coming in.
Agreed. These rules also mean that they won't be able to mug Aaryn when she gets the ball this year.

Players that shoot BTA are not nearly as likely to draw fouls as players who get in the paint. That means that we are not as likely to draw fouls at the rate as a team like Baylor.

That is why I said Sharane should benefit some but others not much. I think you will see more calls in the paint but probably not much difference on the outside.

My understanding is that the bulk of the rule changes concern outside play. You can't impede a player's progress, you can't use two hands or a forearm. You can't keep a hand on the player - All the things that A&M traditionally did to harass the player with the ball and keep them from seeing the court.

I think the "impede" rule primarily applies to players crossing the lane, backdoor cuts, etc. We don't see that much on the perimeter.

You can still harass a player with the ball as long as you don't put your hands on the player. Again, that doesn't happen very often until players start to penetrate. Our girls will have to adjust just like other teams. To be clear, good defenders can still get nose to nose with an offensive player as before. The only difference will be, they will call hand checking.

There's an article in today's transcript that makes it clear that it does indeed apply to perimeter players also. I don't care how much you want to get in Morgan's or Aaryn's face; if you can't put hands on them, you can't keep them from seeing what they want to see, and going where they want to go.

I didn't say the rule doesn't apply to the perimeter, only that we don't see impeding on the outside nearly as much as we do on the inside.

It is a bit confusing as to what Sherri meant when she said, "players will have to learn to play defense with their feet rather than their hands." My first thought was, if you use your feet, would that not be called as impeding.

I think it is interesting that some believe that more fouls will be called on our opponents but it won't affect Sooners much. I think that is wishful thinking.

What this means is instead of playing defense by pushing, grabbing and hacking you will have to play defense by moving your feet and staying between your man and the basket.

The new rules should help skill teams that run good offense with lots of movement (freedom of movement away from the ball is supposed to be called also...no more grabbing and pushing cutters through the lane), shoot well and pass well. It should penalize poor shooting teams (they will get more open shots but lack the skill to make many more) and teams that depend on physical defense to disrupt the offense and create turnovers. Teams like OU and ISU should benefit...teams like A&M and West Va should suffer. However, until we see how they really call the games we won't know the effect and also I would expect to see variation in crews as everyone in college basketball adjusts.
