OSU Hires Mike Boynton

I like Gottlieb. And most high level firms routinely hire people who have never done that particular job before. The same way that college football teams will take a kid playing quarterback and put him at defensive back, even though he's never played that position. It's a talent analysis thing, and I think Gottlieb shows a lot of the characteristics that good head coaches have. For one thing, he's achieved at a high level in his chosen profession, rising to a national talk show host while starting out in backwater Oklahoma local sports talk radio. That in itself is indicative of a high achiever.

But the QB is actually playing football.. the analogy would be more like a sports reporter from the school paper playing defensive back

Doug can sit and wait where he is and the next hiring osu process osu will prolly cave

Dusty Dvoracek, Spencer Tillman and even Dean Blevins have all been national sports announcers. I would not want to see any of them hired if Bob Stoops were to retire tomorrow. It's possible we'd catch lightning in a bottle with one of them, but I wouldn't to take the risk.

my point about ego is that this world is full of guys who are paying their dues as assistant coaches in backwater leagues.....working hard. living a dream. they have families and wives. my uncle coached HS football in Oklahoma and Texas for years.....every Saturday he went to the store to get milk everyone knew his W-L, whether they won the night before.

Until Doug is willing to do that, i give myself the right to not take him that seriously as a coaching candidate at P5 school.

Doug's made a living talking on ESPN and radio....hooray. i kinda think he's pretty insightful guy when he talks about basketball...nothing against him personally, but i don't know the names of a lot of guys working hard at being basketball coaches and i didn't know Mike Boynton's name until yesterday.....but i like the idea of guys like that getting a shot more than Doug Gottleib, right now today.

if Doug wants to coach basketball, let him put his ego in the drawer and be an assistant. wash the jockstraps, push out the balls....if his dad was a coach and his brother....he knows the life.

Enough said.

Not an apples to apples comparison. Again, not an apples to apples comparison. There is a ton more on-field and in-game strategy involved in football coaching than basketball coaching, so that's never going to be a reasonable comparison for the same reason your root canal wasn't. More importantly, OU is not in a position where they need to make high risk, high reward hires. OU football is a destination job. You can bring a guy in from out of state and he's not going to leave. OSU basketball is not that. It's a stepping stone because of how crappy Stillwater is, meaning there is a limited pool of guys they can hire from that will stick around for the long haul if they have success.

I can't say that Gottlieb has an ego or that that's the reason he's been a TV/radio guy and not an assistant, but, aside from that, I agree with everything you say. It takes unique characteristics to be a successful coach at any level, and Gottlieb hasn't proven he has those characteristics.

Eddie Sutton stuck around there a long time and he had a very successful track record before that.

That's true, but they took a huge chance on him considering he had just been run out of Lexington for NCAA violations. If there is a coach with similar circumstances, that could be an option. They needed to get creative with their hire and that's a creative way to get a good coach. What wasn't a workable solution is hiring an assistant with no ties to the area, who group in a big east coast city.

Doug doesnt need it. Thats why he can set terms. He'd like it but he's comfortable doing what he's doing too. Thats not ego.

Yes, but don't you want your coach to be that guy who would coach at any level for any pay because it's in his blood? Stoops says if he weren't a head coach at a D1 school he'd love to coach a jr. high basketball team. It's in his blood.

The way he thrown his name around the last two hires , he reminds me of a two year old on the toy isle who's mom won't buy him what he wants .

Quit acting like OSU was pursing him ...his terms????......he had no leverage whatsoever .Dont act like he was even pursued by another school .

Guy was BEGGING Afro the job ,best he could do was a feel good interview .

I heard Doug told Mike Holder that he can switch Trae Young to OSU if he gets the job.
