Why did Walker only play 3 minutes? Are James and Co. just better? A little odd to me he barely played.

Lon kept the bench rotations short in the second half. Walker looks to be the backup point guard and Cousins played almost all of the second half. When he got a brief breather Woodard took over point guard duties briefly until Cousins returned.

However, Lon did put Walker in very late in the game for defensive purposes.

Here are some quotes from the Memphis coach, Josh Pastner, and his outstanding freshman, Dedric Lawson. They really talked about their team and not much about the Sooners.

Didn't get to see the game so I really enjoyed the vinelights and highlights. Was a bit worried about SS's highlights after the exhibitions but they were pretty good.

I wish someone would do a ~10m game recap on youtube.

I cannot do it on Utube but I can give you a reasonable written description.

OU came out fairly strong and built a 6 to maybe 8 point lead. Memphis closed that lead and OU extended again. OU had the lead for virtually the entire first half but I think it was tied at half.

The first half was all about the officials calling lots of fouls on OU and very few on Memphis. The only thing keeping Memphis in the game during the first half was the fouls/free throws, long rebounds/offensive rebounds and OU turn overs. Right at the end of the half OU basically gave Memphis two fast breaks that I guaranty pissed off the coaching staff.

The second half was again OU with a lead most of the game but they never pulled away. This half the refs called some fouls on Memphis. Memphis went to a zone and OU did not respond well. I think the game was tied up or close to it around 8 minutes left. Memphis actually took a small lead (maybe 3 at most) with about four or five minutes left. OU responded and the teams played tight for a couple of minutes, probably going back and fourth being up 1/down 1 type situation.

Going down the stretch Memphis' best player clearly fouled Hield. It was a no call and they guy would have fouled out. That was a big no call. Another horrible call was a break away on Hield. They Memphis player clearly grabbed his jersey with his arm extended and Hield well past him. Obvious break away could that the officials refused to call. I really don't understand that call. They also would not call fouls when Spangler went to the rim. He was fouled several times but no call. I would say there were 3 of those. Kruger was hot on one or two of them.

Then Woodard hit a big 3 point shot putting OU up 4 with about 1 minute left to play. It was tight, I think Memphis got it back to 1 point but OU closed fairly well. Hield hit all of his free throws and OU won by 6. One scary thing happened, Cousins was called for a foul under 1 minute on a three point shooter. I think it was all ball and so did the TV crew but it was called a foul.

What I liked: I thought McNeace, Buford and James played well off the bench. I thought the starters played well except for Lattin.

What I didn't like: Too many offensive rebounds given up. Too many turn overs, way too many turn overs. I saw very little inside offense. I am not sure anyone attempted to post up the entire game. I think OU needs Manyang. In the first half OU had foul trouble and played Cole. He did alright and I mean nothing against CJ but I would prefer the 7 footer to play over CJ.

Thanks for your recap Denver.

One thing I disagree with is McNeace didn't play very well in my opinion. His defense was soft. He didn't block out or play physical as Memphis was easily posting him up. He also had 3 fouls and 3 turnovers in 9 minutes of play. He played better than Lattin, but they both had a bid game. Buford played a much better game than either of them and actually played some post defense. JMHO.

Good observations.

You're right, there was an obvious difference in the always-gracious Lon Kruger's postgame interview and what Pastner had to say.

I don't blame the Tiger's coach for being proud of his players. He had a right to be. But a more mature coach would have given the visiting team their due for walking out of a hostile arena with a great road win. Hopefully Josh will learn something from Lon.
