OU vs. Missouri, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech Statistical Plus/Minus

I haven't posted a Statistical Plus/Minus review in a while (I was on vacation in Maine) so I thought I'd catch up on the last few games.

OU vs. Missouri:
Code:
Player SPM	Min	Contribution
Warren, Willie 9.9	39	6.8
Pledger, Steven 7.9	38	5.3
Wright, Ryan 4.9	27	2.3
Crocker, Tony 17.1	5	1.5
Fitzgerald, Andrew	64.9	1	1.1
Mason-Griffin, Tommy	0.9	40	0.6
Davis, Cade -1.7	36	-1.1
Gallon, Tiny -11.3	14	-2.8

A good effort by WW and Pledger keyed the win: despite WW's turnovers, he scored points efficiently and handed out 5 assists. Pledger played a solid 38 minutes, recording 2 blocks and a steal on the defensive end. Cade played well as PF (!), but he failed to record an assist, block, or steal--thus hindering his showing in the box score. RW did well, scoring an efficient 12 points with 8 rebounds in just 27 minutes.

OU vs. Texas A&M:
Code:
Player SPM	Min	Contribution
Davis, Cade 9.6	40	5.7
Mason-Griffin, Tommy	4.5	39	2.6
Wright, Ryan 6.5	17	1.7
Crocker, Tony 3.5	31	1.6
Gallon, Tiny 3.0	22	1.0
Warren, Willie -7.0	30	-3.2
Pledger, Steven -12.9	21	-4.1

In the A&M heart breaker, Cade played well as a basic solid role player (9pts, 7RBs, 3 steals), but there weren't any dazzling performances. TMG's scoring touch showed up, but his lack of steals, blocks, and rebounds hinder his showing here. Pledger really hurt the team with his 0-5 from the floor and otherwise totally devoid 21 minutes (what was he doing out there the rest of the time?). WW had 1 assist and 5 turnovers. Ow.

OU vs. Texas Tech:
Code:
Player SPM	Min	Contribution
Mason-Griffin, Tommy	9.3	40	6.8
Crocker, Tony 5.3	40	3.9
Wright, Ryan -0.3	21	-0.1
Davis, Cade 0.2	38	0.1
Fitzgerald, Andrew	-11.7	6	-1.3
Willis, Ray -4.8	20	-1.8
Gallon, Tiny -9.4	16	-2.8
Pledger, Steven -10.5	19	-3.7

A clumsy effort from OU yielded a bad loss. How about just 5 assists as a TEAM?! TMG played an excellent game, scoring well, getting 7(!) rebounds, and only giving 1 turnover. Crocker played well, with a 20-13 double-double (0 assists and 3 TOs, though). The rest played mediocre at best. Pledger carded another clunker, with another 0-5 showing (and 3 TOs to boot!). Just a bad day for all the rest.

How does the season as a whole look? Here are the numbers:

Code:
Player SPM	MPG	Contrib	Per 100
Crocker, Tony 5.4	32.3	56.0	4.3
Davis, Cade 4.2	28.8	39.4	3.0
Warren, Willie 2.3	29.8	22.2	1.7
Gallon, Tiny 2.4	23.7	18.5	1.4
Mason-Griffin, Tommy	0.6	33.7	6.5	0.5
Hardrick, Kyle -2.8	0.2	-0.1	0.0
Pledger, Steven -0.2	20.6	-1.1	-0.1
Franklin, T.J. -14.2	0.6	-2.9	-0.2
Gerber, Beau -35.6	0.3	-3.6	-0.3
Wright, Ryan -0.7	15.9	-3.7	-0.3
Willis, Ray -4.6	4.6	-7.0	-0.5
Allen, Orlando -8.1	3.3	-8.6	-0.7
Fitzgerald, Andrew	-4.2	8.8	-12.0	-0.9

TMG has finally broken 0, but WW and Tiny are still languishing in mediocrity. TC and Cade are playing well, though not great. Pledger is fading a bit. Ryan Wright is really looking better; he has almost reached 0 himself. I guess the story of these last 3 games are the advances of Wright and TMG, and the fading of Tiny and WW (somewhat). OU needs better efforts across the board....

Statistical Plus/Minus (SPM) is a method of estimating each player's impact from the box score statistics. SPM is listed in points above the average player playing per 100 possessions--so if that player was replaced by an average player for 100 possessions, SPM is the difference in the final margin. The total of all player's contributions will sum to the actual scoring margin (each team's total will equal half of the overall margin). The original method was outlined by Dan Rosenbaum at 82games.com; recently additional factors were added by Neil Paine at Basketball-Reference.com. I previously compiled the complete 2008-2009 NCAA numbers on this forum.
