OU vs. San Diego Statistical Plus/Minus

Ouch. OU just got whacked. And San Diego is... not that great. A decent mid-major team, and no Larry Sanders on there to blame it on.

Only two Sooners even showed up and several others played very bad games. The Toreros had some good play from a few key guys and not too much bad play.

A miserable shooting night for OU. Willie remedied that by getting to the line; the rest didn't do so well. Cade Davis filled the box score pretty well in his time on the floor. TMG had a bad game, as did Crocker. Particularly Crocker. Fitzgerald didn't do much good either.

San Diego, on the other hand, had a couple of hot shooters. Johnson played an excellent, clean game. Jackson played a boxscore-filling game (how often do you see 7 RB, 5 AST and 4 Steals from the same player?!). OU just got beat....

What have we seen so far? Warren can carry OU; he keeps trying to at least. He did well this game. He is OU's best player, but he needs to expand beyond just scoring. Pledger and Davis are OU's good stat-sheet-stuffers, their solid and versatile players. All 3 have had solid seasons so far (except for WW's stinker against VCU). Other than Pledger, most of the freshmen have lots of work to do. Turnovers and lack of impact on the defensive end are hurting them. Gallon has shown some flashes, but hasn't passed very well (no assists in the last 3 games) and hasn't played very good defense. Fitzgerald... has looked lost sometimes. TMG has shown good play, but is plagued by turnovers and lack of defense. In other words....

There are a lot of freshmen out there!

Here are the totals through 4 games, with the minutes per game listed:

Statistical Plus/Minus (SPM) is a method of estimating each player's impact from the box score statistics. SPM is listed in points above the average player playing per 40 minutes--so if that player was replaced by an average player for 40 minutes, SPM is the difference in the final margin. The total of all player's contributions will sum to the actual scoring margin (each team's total will equal half of the overall margin). The original method was outlined by Dan Rosenbaum at 82games.com; recently additional factors were added by Neil Paine at Basketball-Reference.com. I previously compiled the complete 2008-2009 NCAA numbers on this forum.
