OU Scrimmage

I had the pleasure of sitting next to Derica's Dad at the Big XII tournament last March. Great family, and we discussed Derica and the team. He told me that Derica is not just a three point specialist, but can drive and and shoot the mid range jumper. I got to see her on line during her high school play offs and she can do it all. It was nice to see her display that last night. I think she will bring alot to the team this season and will be a pleasant surprise.

You are right about Vivi, her knee seems still a little stiff, but as I said, once she gets set up in the post, she does a very nice job. She take contact well and can finish at the rim. I am looking forward to when she is 100%.

Thanks for the insight into Derica's game. Last year, to me, she looked like she knew basketball (for lack of a better way to express what I am thinking).
Maybe it was that, to me, she seemed comfortable and played with abandon.

Looking forward to seeing all of the players.

Last year, I thought that Derica may have been what I really wanted in a guard, other than she might not be as athletic. She can hit the jumper from anywhere. She can hit from outside. She rebounds surprisingly well, and she seems to be where the ball is, somewhat like a Maddie with a lesser athletic ability.

But, I think she lost confidence in her shot. She became hesitant and didn't flow to her shot late in the year. She began extremely well, but, after missing a few, she never seemed to recover her confidence. Curiously, I think Sherri was using her somewhat for her defensive and ball-handling ability nearer the end of the year because she does seem to have good handles.

A loss of confidence isn't all that uncommon for a freshman who is not yet certain of her skill levels for D-1 ball. I think it also happened to Peyton at A&M. If Derica has matured past that, she can be a very effective guard. She was the best that we had last year at getting a rebound and putback. I would much rather have had Derica in the lane than Aaryn or Carter at the end of the year. She is quick at getting it back up, and seems to elevate quickly enough to overcome her lack of athleticism.

That's good to hear. Last year Derica was one dimensional on offense, she either shot BTA or she passed the ball. If she can penetrate, it will add to her effectiveness. Derica is not particularly quick but, some similar players have been able to get by defenders, such as Whitney. If you aren't quick you have to possess basketball smarts. Hopefully, Derica has that.

Derica does play defense pretty well so if she can add to her offense by penetrating and hitting the mid-range jumper, it will earn her more playing time.

Just my opinion, but I think there are some freshmen who come into the program that might not be quite ready for the rigors of college basketball. Last year Derica had the smarts and had the outside shot, I don't think she either felt comfortable or had the chance to show off her other offensive skills. Seeing her Thursday night she looks more confident and more sure of her self of being able to do more things on the court that will help this team.

Are you serious? Mind = blown. Amnesia?

By now, you should know that if I said it, I mean exactly what I said. At the end of the year, I didn't want Aaryn, Morgan, or Carter in the lane unless it was a wide-open layup in a relatively open court. They didn't hit the short jumpers, and they had a tendency to get lost among the tall trees. How many times did Aaryn go into the lane and lose it?

Aaryn going into the lane and losing it is STILL a better outcome than having Derica on the court. Please believe it. Aaryn's negatives outweighs Derica's positives in any situation. Nolo contendere.

Well I saw lots of good things and some not so good. However one of the things was that Sherri can rotate lots of folks on and play defense full court. The new girls can run and they seem willing to guard. It was sort of trying but some turnovers around the basket when passing, when they should have shot the ball. But that is not so bad for a first scrimmage. Very hopeful they can surpass last years team. They are going to be very young, so cross your fingers for some quick learning curve.
