OU - Tech Game

I admittedly watched a different game last night.

Is Tech a shadow of what it once was? How did they only score 30-something? Do they have a new coach? Do they even have a prayer of being as competitive as they once were?

Side note: I just read Leach's "Swing Your Sword" book and it noted how Tech was once a women's basketball school that would regularly draw more for the womens games than the men's and the administration was apparently bending over backwards to Bobby Knight's whims which really upset the womens coach, as well as Leach.

Boomer Sooner across the world :D

The game Sunday with ISU will give us a better idea of where we are as a team.

I was distracted by another game last night, too. Tech had a large senior class last year and has a new coach. They are probably going to struggle for some time.

Well, for those who say we lost the Marist game because of bad coaching, we definitely won this game because of great coaching. Tech's game is penetration, and our answer was to defend having 5 guys with one foot in the paint. We cut off all penetration, and dared Tech to beat us from outside. They couldn't even come close.

Tech is last in the conference in scoring offense, field goal percentage, and 3-point shooting percentage. It would make sense to clog up the middle and give them the outside shot.

Gee, that was painful to watch.

Congrats on the win and good luck down the road.

IMO, the Lady Raiders have been on a downward slide since about 2004. I keep hoping we've bottomed out and are heading back up the ladder. We'll see.

Last season Tech started four senior guards who are all gone now. The junior post who was the other starter is out this season with an injury. So now we have a bunch of freshman and the few upperclassmen have very little playing experience.

Kristy Curry is now coaching at Alabama. She won't be missed by many. Although to give credit where credit's due, Curry was a great defensive coach. Her defense, and point guard Monique Smalls' defense, kept us in a lot of games even when the offense wasn't producing.

Our new coach, Candi Whitaker, was associate head coach at Oklahoma State last season. Before that she was head coach at Missouri-Kansas City. She played two years as a Lady Raider, a junior college transfer who, as starting point guard, led Texas Tech to two Sweet Sixteens under Marsha Sharp. Her name was Candi White back then. She knows what the Lady Raider program once was and believes it can get back there. She "gets" Tech fans and Tech students because she was one.

I have very high hopes for what Coach Whitaker can do with this program. I also see a lot of potential in this year's crop of freshmen. But it's going to take time.
