So I was really bored, and flipping around I landed on Longhorn network and they were showing the 99 game in Lloyd Noble. They didn't actually beat us back then did they? I had to leave and only saw a little. Brought back memories... Najera, Heskett, Michael Johnson, Renzi. I couldn't figure out who #24 was, looked like a guard. Then i finally saw him go to the FT and it was Humphrey. At first i thought it was Deangelo Alexander because he looked guard size, got my years mixed up I guess. Hump did actually have a couple of nice turnaround Js on the low block against Chris Mihm. How tall was Hump? Didn't look that big at all. Anyway, brought back memories....

I haven't seen whorn network ever show games that they lost.

Hump was 6'8". He wanted to be a 3 but he couldn't shoot very well from the outside. He sure could jump though. Transferring to ND was a good deal for him because he ended up getting drafted in the 1st round and got 3 years of guaranteed money. He played several years overseas and is now an assistant coach at Notre Dame.

He didn't accomplish anything at ND that he couldn't have done at OU, and he's admitted as much himself.

As I recall, his dad was very outspoken and had a lot of influence over the transfer.

We lost in Norman 64-60 but won in austin 64-63

he and his father said he transferred because he saw himself being a scottie pippen type player and kelvin had him as a post

so he transferred to ND and after sitting out .. well he was their starting center

hard to be a 3 when you can't dribble or shoot ..

He was part of the twin towers at Booker T. Washington with Etan Thomas. Pretty good pair of high school post players on one team.

It all worked out for him. Mike Brey did keep part of Matt Doherty's promise to Humphrey. He allowed him to shoot from the outside, and Hump showed some range as a senior. That was why Utah (I think it was them) drafted him in the first round, somewhere in the high teens. As expected, he washed out in the NBA, but he got a guaranteed 3-year salary.

Hump transferring may have cost Kelvin an additional Final Four on his resume. I think the 2000 team would have gone that far. Not much shuffling needed - just replace Jameel Heywood with Ryan Humphrey.

Agreed. The west region collapsed that year and opened up for us to get there but we couldn't get past Purdue. We would have beaten them with Humphrey.

I am forever grateful to Heywood for that last second shot at Mizzou that year though. That was a great win. :chestram2:

A couple of things about the 2000 season. Yes, the West region completely collapsed after we left Tucson. The Elite 8 matchup was between 6-seed Purdue and 8-seed Wisconsin. A 64-60 bloodbath eventually won by the Badgers.

But if Ryan Humphrey had stayed I doubt we would've had anything to do with being a 3-seed in the West. There are two losses that year that still sting:

74-71 to O-State in Norman
53-50 to Kansas in Lawrence (one of the worst offensive performances I've ever seen.....and I saw a lot of Kelvinball.)

O-State's probably a wash, because we gave them the Nolan Johnson treatment in Stillwater, but I'm still angry about losing to a crummy KU team in Lawrence.

What affects would Ryan have had on team chemistry? His Dad was definitely a problem. Always a what-if for me. He was a really good player, but it's hard to forget about him pouting after our 54-43 win in Stillwater in 1999 because he went scoreless.

On another note: Jameel Heywood's putback at the horn in Columbia was in 2001. Me and my roommate scared our dorm hall ****less.

My son was a 6'5" center for Ponca City and lost in OT to them in the regional tournament when Etan was a senior. Etan was in the class ahead of Humphrey. My son said Etan was a much better player. Much bigger too. They were 2 NBA 1st round picks. They had other good players, too.

Thomas went to Syracuse? is that right? my memory of Humphrey at ND was seeing him have a nice scoring career but a lot of not getting back on defense...and then being the outlet guy (because he was still at midcourt) for a dunk after a steal or turnover.

i don't have anything against Ryan (i transferred colleges and i'm only partially a reprobate)...and i think we'd have been better with him than without...but i don't know if that's a Final Four team in 99-00.

Yes, Thomas went to Syracuse. As I recall, his parents were divorced and his dad lived up there. He was a bid bodied kid perfect for playing center.

Ryan had something that affected his conditioning. I think he was in shape but he took a lot of plays off. I agree we would have better with him than without him.

If memory serves me correct BJ Tiger and RW McQuarters were also on that team.

I can't remember if they were on that team or not. I thought McQuarters had graduated. We scrimmaged them every season for the 3 years my son played, so I saw them all play at one time or another. Incredible athletes!

Ryan was diagnosed with anemia during his freshman season, which would be 1998.

We played Colorado up in Boulder and Hump came out after his first run and went straight to the oxygen tank. Big, heaving inhales. I'm sure it was miserable for him, but it was a hilarious sight. That poor tank was turned up to 11.

Marcus Hill and Antonio Reed were around that same time as well.

There was a ridiculous amount of D1 bball talent in Tulsa around that time.

Hill was actually the one that told me Hump was leaving OU. I posted it on whatever OU bball board was around at the time, and was nearly laughed off the board. Of course, posting on April 1 might not have been the best idea, but that was the day I found out. lol
