One of the biggest matchups of the Big 12 season comes on opening day. This is probably Iowa St's second toughest game in the Big 12, but on the road against a top 2 team in the country, puts Iowa St in a position of little pressure.
You all know Iowa St's starting lineup: Morris, Niang, McKay, Thomas, and Nader.
Hallice Cooke is a guard that will come off the bench. He's got a high motor, tuff, can play aggressive on defense, and has a history of shooting well from long range, however he has struggled from deep in December.
Deonte Burton is the only other bench player. He's a 6-4 250# forward with a 7'+ wingspan. He was ineligible the first semester, due to transfer rules, (you guys wouldn't understand, the NCAA just gifts you an extra semester of TaShawn Thomas) so he has only played 3 games. This kid is a physical specimen with very high potential, however he's still getting his feet wet with this team. Look for him to be much more of a force later in the season.
The obvious knocks on Iowa St are depth and consistency. Having said that, this is the first game of the conference season, so if there's a time that depth isn't a big deal, it's now. As far as consistency, Iowa St has looked spectacular and terrible, sometimes in the same game.
If the Iowa St of the second half against Iowa, or first half against Cincinnati shows up, I like their chances, even with a lack of depth. Three point shooting for both sides is obviously the key. Can Iowa St limit OU's open looks, while still making their fair share?
Many on Cyclone Fanatic are skeptical that we can slow OU down enough to have a chance.
