OU vs W. Virginia

I thought I had read that, but I wasn't sure it had been implemented. It just seems wrong. WVU player injures an opponents player badly enough that she can't shoot free throws so the WVU coach gets to pick who shoots in her place?

The reason for the rule is to prevent a bad free throw shooter (like Courtney) from faking an injury whereby Sherri would select the best free throw shooter on the bench to shoot the free throws.

Correct, and the injured player cannot re-enter the game.

That stops a poor free throw shooter from feigning injury and being replaced by a better free throw shooter. But if the injured player is a good free throw shooter and the opposing coach gets his pick of who shoots the free throw, that is grossly unfair.

It depends...if it happened to OU, yes, it would be unfair. But, if Sherri got to pick a free throw shooter when we are playing Baylor, it would be completely fair.

yeah, right! I understand the rationale for the rule, but it's OK for someone like Leary to cheap-shot an opposing player to the point that their ability to shoot free throws is impaired; So the opposing coach gets to pick the poorest % reserve off the bench to shoot the FTs...

That stinks...

Exactly. It solves only half of a potential problem. The odds are slanted toward the team who committed the foul.

That is ridiculous, Norm! Perhaps you are speaking tongue-in-cheek, I don't know, but the fairness of the issue has absolutely nothing to do with whose ox is being gored!

I hope that you were being facetious...

There is an exception to the rule. If the foul is judged to be intentional, the injured player's coach selects the replacement shooter.

Seems sensible to me. This prevents intentionally injuring a player who is a good FT shooter, in the hopes of replacing the player with a poor shooter from the bench.

The officials rarely call an intentional foul when it clearly is so I'm not so sure that exception will be realized. Sharane was clearly fouled intentionally, whether the defensive player was going for the ball or not, and the officials didn't even think about that. Coaches call for players to foul at the end of the game many times and that's intentional but is never called as such.

From what I find in Google searches, the rule about the opposing coach picking the shooter is an NBA rule. In the NCAA, the Coach of the injured player can pick any player from the bench.
All theoretical anyway as Sharane stayed in and made the one that counted.

Relax Blackwell, can't you take a joke?!?!

Actually, the opposing coach gets to pick a player off the bench to replace the injured player to take FTs.

Actually, that's a men's rule only. In women's ball the coach can select any of the other players who were on the court at the time of the foul.

I just confirmed this from the current official rulebook.

WOW, I didn't realize the rule was different for the women. Thanks!

You're welcome, Norm. The reason this caught my eye was because of some game I caught a bit of earlier this year where a Flagrant 1 was called when a player was hurt when fouled. The player's coach did indeed choose the shooter, although I hadn't been watching closely enough to know if the player who shot the freebees was from the court or not.

PS - Downloading docs from NCAA now requires registration, a slightly tortuous process. Took me over an hour to register and download, and less than 10 minutes to find the interpretations and the rule.

Not for the faint at heart...
