OU vs Winthrop

Sherri said Gioya had her wisdom teeth removed today so that's why she was behind the bench.

The inside players looked much faster tonight. Perhaps due to a somewhat slower pace than in the exhibition.

I noticed Sherri was pretty quick to pull a player when a mistake was made - then would chat a bit with her on the bench. Part of that may simply be having several players who can be rotated without too much drop-off.

I guess we know now why Wyatt was in the starting lineup in the exhibition game. Best she has looked since her hot game as a freshman.

I thought ViVi had slightly a better game than Kaylon. She got 10 points and 5 boards in 11 minutes. Good production. I also think she makes better decisions and is more consistent than KayKay.

Speaking of decisions I thought poor decisions was about the only negative in the game tonight. Too much poor shot selection, bad angles, hopelessly covered and too many nearly impossible passes. And passes that do not have to be made. And too many drives into double and triple coverage.

Otherwise I liked our game. Zone bothered us some but we did a good job of adjusting to it. And a good job of creating offense off our defense.

Better on help defense tonight but still too many cases where someone is beating one of our players and no one helps.

Don't understand Kellogg playing as much as Maddie at the 4. If Sherri wants to go big I would rather see her leave KayKay in to play the 4 and put Vivi or EJ under the hoops. KayKay can at least hit a 12 footer and her offense from the 4 can't possibly be worse than Kellogg's.

Gabbi was just awful tonight. She had a quick defender and probably tried to overpower her rather than give up the ball and then get it back. Hopefully we have seen the worst game of her college career. We know what she can do and I am not worried about her.

Edwards, Gabbi and LaNesha had 15 of our 21 turnovers. They can help the team more if they play a little more under control.

I guess that I can't disagree with much that has been said. It was a difficult game to get a read on some things.

Vivi/KayKay: I thought Vivi was a bit more effective. Kay Kay looked better at times, but she also had her shot blocked a couple of times. Vivi had similar numbers in half the time on the court. Not a decisive statement by either. Didn't see much of EJ.

Maddie/Shaya: Shaya was relieving Maddie. I think it was to give Shaya some experience against a team that wouldn't kill her. She really wasn't bad. She was two of four for four points with six rebounds. But, Sherri seems to think she is effective as a part of a rotation, and she wants to develop her. Maddie didn't need time against Winthrop. I thought she looked in control when she was on the floor. She got a bit too cute with that return pass to Penzo. Looked pretty for a turnover.

Peyton had a tough start, strong finish. Derica was so different tonight. She looked like she could play.

I was a bit disappointed in T'Ona's drives, LaNesia's ball-handling, and Gabbi's seeming indifference. I've never seen Gabbi look like she was lost in space. She didn't seem to notice people around her. Penzo was OK. Needs to learn to shoot. If Penzo learns to shoot, she can be a starter. She knows where the ball is, and she can beat quicker players.

KayKay did fine until they started changing their post defense. After they started collapsing on the post when the ball came in, Vivi was more effective, In fact she was the only one who was effective of those who insisted on charging blindly into the crowd and trying to throw up a prayer.

I was surprised that neither Gabbi or Maddie played well considering the level of competition. When you add LaNesia to that group, we didn't get much scoring at all from 3 of the starters. Fortunately, Derica came in red hot and Peyton got it in gear after a slow start.

I expect Derica starts the next game and the other 4 will be the same. The problem with Derica is, she is slower that Williams and you give up some defensive ground with her in the game. But, you gain scoring ability and she isn't nearly as likely to turn the ball over. I wish Derica could dribble drive and knock down some 15 ft jump shots.

I don't think Penzo is going to play meaningful minutes this year. She has not yet given the appearance that she can score and no way can she guard quick players. I don't think Shaya will either.

Edwards is capable of playing better than she did last night. We need for her to be a solid backup to Gabbi. That includes making good decisions and taking care of the ball.

The bottom line is, we desperately need Gioya back in the lineup. She brings scoring from the outside, driving ability, and defense. We don't have anyone behind her who is close to doing all of those things.

I look for Gabbi and Maddie to bounce back and play well within the next game or two.

A few comments about the game. Derica showed why she is well thought of by coaching staff. Shot well, and played really good defense-only credited with 2 steals, but kept offensive player in front of her, and tipped several passes. Most effective run was fueled when she was in playing in the 1-3-1 trap with tete on base, Maddie in front, and Peyton on the other side.
Winthrop had good quickness, but when we focused we handled it easily.
Maddie replaced by Shaya; looked to me like both to get playing time for Shaya, and also to remind Maddie that if she was playing, she had to be aggressive or she would sit. Shaya looked better than I have seen her. Shot and rebounded well. She and McKenna may be the 4 back up for Maddie.
Gabbi still not in form we thought she would be. Laying back to let others shine until they need her? Tired from playing BB all summer? She has not yet been the team star I thought she could be.
G Penzo showing abilities, but it may be a while until she comes close to full physical health.
Peyton, T'ona, Maddie all playing well. Kay Kay and Vivi, either effective inside.
Actually a little better than usual team work for the opening game. Shows returning players experience.
Going to be a exciting season, and all players working hard for playing time!!!

Maddie was three of five from the floor, one of one from three, for seven points. She also had a rebound, four assists, only one turnover (got too cute, but it was fun to watch), two (of the three) blocks, and a steal in nineteen minutes. She was running their offense nuts with her hands, keeping balls alive on rebounds, and getting some tipped balls. She had a pretty fair game. But, this was Winthrop, and we didn't need Maddie.

We needed to get some time for Shaya and others to show what they could do. We let Shaya and Penzo get probably more minutes than they would have gotten in a close game. It would be nice if they were to develop, and Sherri sees something in Shaya as she has said in post-game interviews. Shaya didn't do badly.

Derica and Shaya both had rough games in the exhibition game but both played better last night.

First of all, Shaya is really improved and I like her on this team. She got minutes cause she is vocal and plays tough D. As a coach you have to support those personalities.

But Maddie had a contact knocked out before the first rotation, otherwise I think she would of probably played at least 23 mins like everyone but Peyton.

I think we can officially say, that we expect more than 7 pts from Maddie now. I know that after watching all the areas she has improved on in that Exhibition game, as well as this last game, She should score more pts than that. She has a TON of talent, and a TON of skill. But, she didn't play much because, it was Winthrop. And when teams play zone, no one passes her the ball. She plays that high post- theres space and she's open but they don't throw it to her. I think they'll watch film and that will change. She is too good to not have the ball in her hands, especially if its at the elbow. But if you were REALLy watching the game, Maddie dominated. She made so many great plays, that are sometimes very subtle- but they are Thee Play. Nothing against Peyton, but Maddie is the player that will take us somewhere. Where she goes, we will follow. I think she will have a spectacular season.

And Peyton and Maddie go together like Peanut Butter and Jelly. Such great compliments to each other- a fun duo to watch, that we may talk about for a while after they are gone.

I think we have a great team, that fits together Very well. TT and Lenesia, maybe need to learn to adjust to being a shorter player. You can't drive into the trees if you can't get the ball over them- But other than that, they are both really improved as well.

Gabbi is just trying to do too much right now. I remember seeing something where she said her favorite player was Steph Curry, I think I saw a lot her trying to be that the other night. She will get it together tho, I saw her do a lot of really good things as well.

Great post! I think this will be exciting season, for sure!

Nice post.

Hey NMSooner'80 was that you trying to answer the trivia question at the game Friday night?
