Fair question...

Do you think the current OU roster is an "eyesore" for a potential candidate?

What I mean is....Buzz has a better roster at MU going into next year as does Pastner @ Memphis. Why take a house that needs to be flipped when you've already built a mansion? Both of these guys have a great chance at a long NCAA run next season.

It definitely can't help you guys.

You have eight guys on your current roster who will still be there after next season, so a new coach would have five scholarships to work with over his first two years. He could easily open up another spot or two by cutting dead weight, though.

I don't think so. Assuming no one transfers, we have a decent core of young players in Cam, Fitz, Pledger, Neal and Osby. If the new coach can clear up some scholarship space by convincing some 'dead weight' to transfer, we can bring in 3-4 guys and breath some new life into the team.

I guess I should have clarified. In the very short-term (next year), why would you trade a roster that's NCAA tourney-quality for a team that may barely get you into the NIT? It just doesn't seem to be a smart decision based on the rosters alone. I'm not being negative, just truthful. OUr roster is one of the worst in the Big 12(10) talent-wise heading into 2011-2012.

If we are after anyone with a roster that is worse than ours, we are indeed in sad shape. I would assume that picking a school has more to it than just whose roster is better, but if the schools are even in the coach's eyes then the roster situation would probably be a factor.

I think you have to look long term, we can recruit better long term. Unless we bring in some impact players, I feel that we will be around .500, hopefully a little better.
I think if a new can bring in some guys that are better than what we have, then we have to cut some dead weight. I hate doing that, but this program is bigger than one or two guys.

That's kind of my point and I'm not being as eloquent as I should be...why would Buzz or Pastner leave their gigs for OU right now? Currently, Memphis and Marquette are great jobs and they both have very good teams going into next year. Why give that up if the money is close to the same? I don't know if OU is the better job as of today, March 20th.

We have some good parts. We just don't don't have a lot of depth and we don't have athletic guards. And we're small at the post. I think we may be better off if we played Washington as a big guy with Fitzgerald because Fitzgerald couldn't rebound well and isn't a great defender. Washington when he was in could defend and rebound well. So why not just play more 2 forward sets with Washington and Fitz?

It's not just comparing OU's roster to a coach's current roster. It's also OU vs. Arkansas, NC State, Tennessee, etc. Most coaches that are mentioned for one job are being mentioned for a few others, as well.

I've been consistent in saying that I think "coaching" is our biggest problem. I think our current roster is good enough to win 20 games, and put ourselves in position to make the tourney. I really do, and I've said that consistently since the season started.

Next year, adding Osby, even though he didn't do much at MSU, we'll still have two top 50 guys, and two more top 100 guys. Cam will be a soph, the other three juniors. That isn't a bad start.

Our roster overall with John Wooden, Adolph Rupp or Phog Allen coaching or a combo of all 3 wouldn't win 15 games.
Any new coach has to have the authority to show at least 2 or 3 guys the door. Anyone who can't get that right would be a fool to take on the OU job.
Just say thanks to Hadrick, Thompson etc. and good luck, sorry we ever signed ya.
Do want to be sentimental or win?

I don't think this year's roster is good enough to make the tourney, maybe next year. Coaching would have definitely helped a bit, but I just don't see us in the tournament conversation if we had Coach K...gotta have the horses to get it done.

depends on what style they are playing.

Kelvinball? they could make the tourney.
Billyball? probably not
Capelball? we see what happened

Capel won 14 games and you're saying none of those could have won any more games? And I don't think you can "show a kid the door" i.e. kick him off the team if he didn't do anything wrong. That's shady business.

maybe if hardrick could just keep his grades bad we can get rid of him & nick only has one more year.

It's not always kicking a kid off the team. Sometimes it is just a coach having a frank discussion about how the kid won't likely ever see the floor again and that maybe it's a good idea to transfer.

never quite figured that one out myself. I think he was trying to be balanced.

If by balanced you mean having "no identity", then I agree - Capel was very balanced. I have yet to see successful coach in any level of basketball not have something to hang their hat on. Capel had nothing consistent from year-to-year, which, in my opinion, led to his dismissal.
