OU's Most Memorable NCAA Tourney Moment

I'll never forget watching the 99 Zona game in Norman at Coach's on Main Street. We had been there for a while and were pretty cranked up. The place went nuts when we won...did someone have a pretty cool tip-in late in the game? Was Humphrey still around then? As I said, we had been there a while and my memory is fuzzy....

I know we beat that Maryland team earlier that year but they were a very different team come tournament time - as an OU fan I can say I don't think we win that game even if we got past Indiana.

Disagree. Our physical defense would have eaten them up. KU might have been the tougher rematch, given their familiarity with OU. OU was playing some great basketball up to that IU game. You never know what would have happened, of course, but I think OU was the best team in the country at the start of that Final Four.

i would say we were the best team in the county until the last 2 min of the mizzou game when white sprained his ankle

Yes, that was the game and the Memphis player I was trying to remember was, indeed, Keith Lee. Do you recall the final score of that game, WaymanFan? Also, was that the next game after we beat La. Tech in overtime?

That Memphis team had some good players. Keith Lee, who you were thinking of, William Bedford, Baskerville Holmes, Vincent Askew and Andre Turner. As WaymanFan mentioned, Turner clearly palmed the ball. It would have given OU the ball with less than 30 seconds to play. We lost 63-61.

The next year, Memphis was put on probation for buying players and the NCAA vacated the records from 1985 which means in the books, that game never happened. It was a terrible draw for OU, though as we had just lost to Memphis State the previous year in Memphis by 4 and Lee just really did a number on Wayman. I think Wayman still had a decent game, but not his normal and the same for the game for the final 4 in 85. Both teams had essentially the same roster in both years so I remember when it was revealed that Memphis was in our bracket, my dad didn't think we had any chance to get by them. Turns out, he was right.

Here's a great article about that Memphis team. Sad what happened to all those players...

I don't remember the final score, except that we lost by two points. We had a chance after the missed free throws to tie it, but there were only 4 seconds on the clock. Anthony Bowie got it up the floor quickly and had a decent shot go off at the buzzer, but it bounced off the back of the rim (I think). Yes, it was the game following the OT win over La. Tech. Prior to that we beat NC A&T (1st round) and Illinois State (2nd round).

That game is not allowed to be mentioned in my house. I still think that team had a chance that year - even against UNLV. Those three BS fouls against Patterson were the worst.

We had beaten them 3 times in the previous 18 months to that....so yeah we had a shot.

Stupid Rick Fox. 1st this and then Eliza Dushku a decade later.

Beating E Tennessee State in OT in 89.

Negatives:
......

So being 1-point away from the single worst loss in NCAA history (by anyone) doesn't make the negative column?

Anyhow...
I've got a ton of great memories. Most of them already covered.
Good stuff guys.

i know everyone poos themselves over UNLV but I felt we matched up well against them. Billy recruited much like Tark did(Without the money). He liked guys 6'2" to 6'8" or so that were long and athletic. The teams were similar in style and make up. I wasn't afraid to play them.

F'ing Rick Fox.

It was a good memory for me, but it was way down the list. It was a good memory because I was a sr. in high school, already enrolled at OU for the next year and was playing in a soccer game. A group of us were following the OU game on a radio while the JV were playing their soccer game. I can remember going out to my car between the JV and varsity games to listen to OT. I was nervous as heck, but we pulled it out. Nothing better than listening to John Brooks on the radio. That's why it's a good memory. :woot
