Lemme say that I dont believe in cheating. You follow the rules and work to change them if you disagree.

That said - look at the ridiculous BS here. I see a darn video and story about the football team members going on a shopping spree with the $450 Bestbuy gift certificates given to each of them ... yet basketball is potentially dragged over the coals and a beloved staff member loses his job over $100 intended for EXACTLY the same purpose.

We're lucky. Just think what penalties we would face if they had eaten a too expensive meal.

I think you already know the answer to your question. The shopping spree you referenced was a gift to the football players from the Russell Athletic Bowl. The $100 cash meant for the basketball players was a gift from an OU donor. One is approved by the NCAA and the other is a violation of the rules.

I agree, it doesn't seem fair. But we both know that the NCAA and fairness can be a conflict in terms sometimes. Kelvin Sampson is a prime example. He made too many phone calls to recruits and got himself and OU in trouble with the NCAA. He did it again at IU and found himself out of a job with a show cause label attached to his name for the next five years. Three years later the rule was changed and the rest is history. But that still didn't wipe the slate clean for Kelvin. He broke the rules and he had to suffer the consequences.

The NCAA and their long list of rules are in a serious need of a major overhaul. And it's not just the rules, the way they are applied is not always fair either. No one can convince me that some schools don't get a break, even it's in the speed of an appeal process.

I know in addressing the difference in the two, I have raised more questions, not answered the one you proposed. Sorry, but that's the best I can do when so many things the NCAA does make no sense to me.

Dumb rule, but screw Szendrei. Guy knowingly put the program in harm's way.

The NCAA clearly looks after themself. They let Cam Newton play when they had to know that rules had been broken. They hardly looked at the Mulkey antics with the Griner AAU team. In both cases they would have taken some of the luster off the championship games had they enforced the rules. They are certainly looking the other way regarding Kentucky basketball. No way does any school become so attractive to get 5 of the top 10 recruits every year. And it is not about how great a coach Cal is. He got run out of the NBA by his players.

They seem to have a million rules and the teams that self report get nailed. Their investigations are pathetic.
