The pack line defense seems to be gaining some momentum lately. Virginia and Wisconsin run it. If you don't know what it is basically it is man to man with the help defenders at least 3 feet inside the three. Here is a good 3 min overview http://youtu.be/7NHzpDT4l8M.

I'm curious what you all think about it. It seems like a defense that would work well against the offense OU ran this year. I think it would "help" OU fall in love with three.

I can see it gaining steam to stop the dribble drive offenses and force more 3ptrs.

During the ND State game the commentators mentioned something about a different defense that they were running. Was it the pack line defense?

I think it's just the cool thing to talk about this year. Most of the time, it just looks like smart man to man with good help defense to me. You can't run that against just any team, it basically gives up all the open 3's they want.

Pack Line defense is nothing new. It has been around for a long time. It frustrates the crap out of teams that want to penetrate and score or forces you to beat them from the outside.

A lot of teams considered "good man Defense" teams do it or a form of it. You are in help more than other man to man defense. You work on the only guy out is the guy on the ball, everyone else clogs the lane. Teams shouldn't be able to get in the paint, they should be forced to kick the ball back outside.

If you rebound the ball well on the background this can be tough. Most teams are not going to beat you if they have to score almost all their points from outside.

This is nothing new, just being emphasized the last couple years due to every team's propensity to drive the lane. Teams will adjust and a new scheme will get all the publicity.

good summary ..

It may be effective, but I'd rather sit on a cactus than watch Wisconsin play basketball. Man that is brutal watching them take the air out of the ball. Exhibit A for the need for a shorter shot clock.

Wisconsin's defense is not what makes them boring to watch. It is their offense.

Hence why I said them taking the air out of the ball and needing a longer shot clock.

Wait I thought it was a shorter shot clock you wanted?

Haha just messing with ya. I didn't catch that part, it was my mistake.

With the change in emphasis of the rules, help defense has become more important and something OU did not do well. On ball defense is tougher, as you are not able to reach, grab and disrupt a player as easily as in the past.

Help defense has been around for years and it's not all that difficult to teach, but sometimes it hard to employ. I am watching a bunch of 14-year old kids try to learn it now.

And you are right it can leave 3 point shooters more space, but if they shoot 30% from 3then, generally, you win.
