They were off and running at 7:30 this morning. Kruger's basketball camp starts this morning. Many of the players are working the camp and so there was no pickup game after practice. They went for a solid spirited hour.

The start was the same as yesterday. About 10 minutes of ball handling drills followed by a 3 man weave drill up and back against the clock. The bigs all run the floor and handle the ball in an impressive manner.

They then went into the 3 on 3 full court trapping and pressing drill the same as yesterday. I think that it is important to note that this is a drill they didn't use much if any over the past 3 yrs. And, it may be an indication of how Kruger intends to play this season.

Next up was a 4 on 4 perimeter defense drill. It was basically the offense rotating the ball around the perimeter and the defense working on their shifts and rotation. The clock was on and they went for the full 30 seconds. It was high energy and high intensity. No standing around with arms spread. It was on the ball poking and slapping. Once again, it might be and indication of how it will look in the fall.

Next up was putting in some offense. Cousins is still limited to no contact work. The first five on the floor were Woodard, Buddy, Buford, Bennett, and Spangler. Take that clue for what you want. But, experience tells me that with Cousins injured, Booker out of the country, and Thomas' waiver still unapproved, that would be the starters if they had a game tonight. Buford has worked exclusively on the wing the first two days and Thomas is regulated to the black shirt walkon team the same as Osby and M'Baye when they were sitting out a year. Optimism remains high that his waiver will be approved. But, until that happens, others will be getting the work ahead of him.

The offensive work today was designed to get the ball inside with the play ending with a big to big pass around the basket. Lattin and McNeace later rotated in for Spangler and Bennett and more of the same. Another clue I think. The offense may look more like the previous 2 yrs than last yrs. four around one look.

They carried what they learned into some full court 5 on 5 to top off the practice. Spangler was outstanding again today doing what he does. Jordan was good and Walker had another solid outing. Bennett took a pass down low and made a really nifty reverse layup with Thomas all over him to highlight another good outing. Buddy has been really good even though lacking in highlight reel plays.

I may be way to early. But. I'm climbing on the Lattin bandwagon. He is getting his little feelings hurt some when the older kids push him around. But, this kid has come in making plays against known quality opposition. The way it has worked out the first two days he and Thomas have been on each other a lot. Thomas is obviously the better player. But, Lattin will battle and gets a win every once in a while. Big/bright future for Lattin.

They go again at 7:30 in the morning. I would encourage anyone with the time and inclination to show up and get on board with this group.

Was Manyang there again?

What is the future practice schedule?

Thx for these updates.

Thanks for another great report, Gary!

I'm not the least bit surprised by the things you said about Lattin. IMO, he is a star in the making. The size, athleticism, the genetics and the skills are already there. All he needs is experience and a little more muscle to more than hold his own against the Big 12's best post players.

So, judging by what you said about the plays the team ran with our post players this morning, it seems clear that our focus this season may be to take advantage of our size inside, and deemphasize our perimeter game to some extent. Doing that, of course, will also make it easier to get more open shots from the perimeter for our guards and wings, and thereby, achieve the balance we didn't have last year.

Is that a fairly accurate assessment based on what you saw this morning?

Will be nice to have this post depth that we can hopefully cut Spangler's minutes back in certain games, so he will be fresher for this big ones and late in the season.

Sure. Kruger has said that he wanted more balance in his offence. That is the first thing he has gone to work on.

Great stuff as always, Gary. I will try to get by once we are back in town.

Great stuff Gary. I wish I could be there. I just retired last week and have the time..... but live out of state. That's why some of us rely so heavily on you.
