Preseason Press Conference

If Gabbi, T'ona, and Maddie are all significantly better than last year, that's good news.

In the press conference, Sherri is really high on Maddie.

One of the highest rated players out of HS and now several years of experience - both on the court and on the sideline as she recovered.

If Sherri is right we may be in for a real treat.

I would say that she looks happy. I think she has some confidence in this team.

Im thinking were gonna be pretty tough.

And I really like how they left us behind Texas, leaving us with something to prove. Its gonna be a fun basketball season.

I know Treece will be out a bit but Sherri mentioned 2 being out for the beginning of the season. Anyone know who else is injured?

I noticed that, too! Are Shaya and Penzo both fully healthy?

I expect this year to be a good year! Still young and learning but the sky is the limit for this group! Looks like this team has great chemistry off the floor which is a plus!

Sherri has indicated they have worked hard on defense and fouling, which should hep a lot. We haven't heard much about rebounding but hopefully that will be better as well.

In other interviews, Sherri has talked about the improvement in Vivi, Derica, Gileysa, and Gioya. I think she only mentioned five players in this interview: Maddie, Gabbi, T'Ona at the top with EJ and LaNesia as a response to questions. She did notice a turnover by Kay Kay. But, her concentration was on Maddie, Gabbi, and T'Ona.

I am pleased that Maddie is beginning to show her talent. As Sherri says, she is gifted. I am not surprised that Gabbi is coming on. She began to come on strong at the middle of last year, and she was the stabilizer for a U19 team that wasn't bad. But, the praise of T'Ona was a bit surprising. She can now shoot? She is quicker? That is probably due to confidence as she knows what to do now. She did indicate that everyone is better on free throws. If T'Ona can shoot, she becomes pretty valuable.

T'Ona hit a couple of 3s during the last few weeks of the season last year and I was pleasantly surprised. If she can become consistent on hitting those when defenders are sagging off her, that will really help her game in that it would open up lanes for passing or driving to the basket. She is more than quick enough and the more she can effectively back up Gabbi, the more effective Gabbi becomes, I think. I'm anxious to see her's and the other's improvement on the court!

I thought it was very interesting that Sherri brought up the fact that it was not always apparent who the point guard was in 2002. Any one of three players mentioned might have brought the ball up court.

We have had years in which we had nobody who could bring the ball up court, which is the reason that A&M was a nemesis.

We now have Gabbi, Maddie, and T'Ona. We assume that Penzo can do it. Last year, Peyton did it a couple of times. At the end of the year, West Virginia was given teams fits because of their press. We had nine turnovers in our last meeting (I think), fewer than they had. Their press was not a problem. A couple of teams early in the year had some success because Maddie was not yet out there, and Gabbi had a tendency to get across midcourt and pick up the ball, resulting in a trap. She learned.

This indicates a skill that we have that we sometimes lacked. It also indicates a versatility. We haven't had anyone in some time that could play the 1,2,3, or 4. We have several who are 1, 2, or 3s.

As Sherri mentioned, we have had someone 6-4. But, now, we have several that are in that category. Our depth at the five is the best since Courtney/Abi. And, we have guards?
