Just finished watching the game...had to DVR it. Glad we won...but I felt the refs were horrible. Way too many quick whistles!!! Ticky tack..whatever you want to call it...it was painful to watch at times.

BTW, the '88 team would have beat that team by 20. :-)

It wasn't just that the refs called a lot of fouls, they were wildly inconsistent.

I hate watching games like that. They have no rhythm.

Worst thing about officiating is this endless need for video review, I can't stand it.

I thought they were fine the first 10 minutes and then decided to reel the lead into a ballgame!

Pretty much agree with this. Started with the technical against Buford. The ref standing right there apparently didn't think anything necessitating a T happened, but the one across the floor did. Seemed like he must have felt the intensity of the game was getting away from him and he decided to send a message. I hate when officials do that. Same as players, officiating crews have to keep their heads and tune out crowds in lively environments. If the game is getting away from you, control it with consistency of calls, not volume.

had we lost, I would not have blamed the officiating.

but that was not a lane violation on Cousins. ref needs to pay better attention.

I didn't get to see the game, but these comments don't surprise me. If you play in one of the holiday tournaments in Hawaii, Hawaii and Chaminade tend to get very favorable officiating.

Early in 87-88 in a tournament in Hawaii. OU squeaked out a win over Georgia. Who would go on to have a 15-16 record that year.

Yup. It has actually gotten better (hard to believe after last night) since coaches started to openly complain about this. I forgot who, but remember a quote from a coach after his team lost, and the question surrounded the officiating. I may be paraphrasing slightly, but the quote went something like this: "That wasn't a poorly officiated game. If you want to see a poorly officiated game, just watch any game Chaminade plays in a holiday tournament in Hawaii."

No it wasn't. I do think know how one could even argue that it was.

Yep...I don't blame officiating either regarding wins/losses. They can certainly have an effect on tempo and fluidity of the game (like last night), but you have to adjust.

And the officials certainly weren't making Hawaii's shots go in and ours miss.

Officials are rarely the only reason a team loses, but they can certainly influence a game, and in rare cases, they can have a huge impact. A coach and his players have to do their best to fight past the officials' influence, of course, but there are rare games (OU-KSU in Manhattan last season, to name one) when that's very hard to do.

And the officials certainly weren't making Hawaii's shots go in and ours miss.

Of course not, but in extreme examples, they can impact how a team plays defense. Let Team A bang while you call ticky-tack fouls on Team B, and you are impacting the game, plain and simple. Team B feels shackled, unable to go all out on D or in attacking the boards, while Team A is free to cut it loose and play with abandon. We've all seen this happen at times, and it's silly to pretend it doesn't.

I agree, there were way too many fouls called. Hurts watching the game. But no team was cheated, only cheated was people trying to watch the game.

I would be curious to hear the opinions of our friends that used to officiate.

I thought both technicals were questionable. I really didn't like when the official under the Hawaii basket in the first half deferred to the outside official who gave OU the ball and then reversed him. He basically said I don't know what happened but I know what I want to have happened.

And I never said nor implied that it doesn't exist. My problem with b!tchfests about the refs on this board when some feel that OU is being unjustly persecuted.....is that there is no intellectually honesty when the roles are reversed.

It would be refreshing once in a while for some of those posters (who are quick to b!tch about the refs) to acknowledge that, in some games, the refs let OU play their game and let OU get away with some things.......and in these instances, it's our opponent who is at a disadvantage. But you will never hear that from these posters because "they want to have their cake and eat it too". When OU has adversity, it has to be a direct result of the referees. Yet when OU is playing well and getting the benefit of some 50/50 calls, well that is just OU imposing their will. You can't have it both ways. That sh!t gets old and only exposes some of those who have, most likely, never played a minute of ball in their life.

Got to be talking about every game with the jayhawks

I noticed it much more last year than this year coming in. As far as OU games it wasn't that bad till last night. But I guess I'm used to NBA rules where if a guard penetrates and gets to the basket even if he is barely grazed by a defender a foul usually gets called.

With the new rules, it's just the way it's going to be. They called it fair.
