The approximately 16,000-gross square-foot addition will be constructed south of the two existing practice facilities for the men’s and women’s basketball programs. The facility will help enhance strength training facilities for both basketball programs as well other Sooner student-athletes.

The estimated total cost of the project is $7 million, with funding identified, available and budgeted from private donations from OU Athletics funds.

I didn't read the article but I'm guessing no mention of the coaches offices?

Where's HeismanWatch? :facepalm

I love the basketball team and all but isn't this a little in bad taste when the day before they announced a 7% tuition and fees increase?

With all of the money being spent on the stadium and the football facilities, the $7MM is peanuts.
This facility will help all of the minor sports alot. Soccer, Softball, Baseball, Tennis, Golf, etc will all be able to improve performance and RECRUIT better players.

Not a penny comes from the University for these facility upgrades, nor ANY athletic expenditure. In fact, the athletic department gives the university (academics) millions each year. Thanks to Joe C and David Boren in creating a self sufficient athletic department. Less than 10 self sufficient athletic depts in the country!

The TIMING is in bad taste.

So you think the Regents should have just not voted on it? It's an open meeting so that would have been the only other option. Certain processes have to be followed before things can be voted on, no matter if they are publicly or privately funded. If you delay the vote, it might be 3, 6 or 9 months before you can vote again.

It only looks bad if you don't know the facts or don't take the trouble to find out the facts.

I'm afraid you're barking up the wrong tree. AD paying for AD facilities. Self sufficient through and through.

A far cry from the days of Steve Owens and John Blake.

I couldn't agree more. This would be a real issue at some athletic department taking millions from its school to break even. This is an athletic department that pays its own bills first then gives back to the school. It cannot be stressed how extremely rare of a situation this is. Timing be damned. Except for ut, I haven't heard of this (AD donating to the university) happening anywhere else in college athletics. $7-10 million a year if I remember...

Can't they just raze the class rooms? After all, are they not a hindrance to the University as a whole?
