Charley...are you smoking your banjo?

True, the 99 team lost some games early because the defense couldn't sustain a lead, but the defense was much better at the end of the season than at the beginning. Go back and look at the stats and you will see this.

Exactly my point, thanks.

You said: "Past results is an indicator of future performance."

See, the past results were "the defense couldn't sustain a lead" and the future performance was an NC in 2000.

By the way the D in 1999 didn't improve during the season all that much, we lost two of our last three games.

Bob Stoops was a first year coach in a program that hadn't won in a long time. None of the players on that team had experienced a winning season at the college level. Capel has been here 4 years and should have his program established already.

Oh, Charley...put down the banjo.

I was talking about the way Capel handles his players. I wasn't talking about our defense and offense or the football team. If he didn't discipline players this year, what makes anyone think he will starting today (at the end of this season).

Go back and read the thread then get back to me. If you can't follow the discussion, please don't chime in. Thanks.

How can you say this? Capel never once pulled TMG or WW for that matter and rarely pulled Tiny (did a few times) for laziness on the court. Do you think he will wake up today or tomorrow a different person?

People don't change like that, especially a late 30's person. Capel isn't intense enough to make mass changes in the way he handles players.

Having said this, I hope he does change things...just don't see it happening. Hopefully I'm wrong.

You're probably going to be right, but he has sounded sort of mad the last couple weeks.

He can sound mad all day long but until he puts some butts on the bench next to him it won't matter what he says or how he sounds to the press.

If it were me last week, when we played aTm and were down 10 with 6 minutes left and TMG takes an ill-advised shot and misses. Capel turns his back to the game and bends over like he can't believe we just took that kind of shot. At that point, instead of the demonstration he should have gotten Franklin and put him in for TMG and let him play the rest of that game. Then, let TMG start last night, but early on when he refused to guard Page, he should have done the same thing.

Both games we lost anyway and if he'd done that (or something similar), honestly I would feel much better about the direction of the program.

Dude I'm sorry but that's ridiculous. I see this crap from you all the time. Just bring in the end of the bench because "at least they'll play hard." Do you realize what would happen if we actually played Franklin and Gerber against good teams for a significant part of the game? Do you want to lose by 50? I'm sure you'd be on here praising Capel for losing by 50 as long as he brings in the walk-ons.

I'd rather sacrifice a game we are already going to lose and make a point to a player than to let that player continue to put forth very little effort (even if we lost by 50).

Plenty of coaches have done this (Roy Williams, Bill Self, Kelvin Sampson, etc.). You never know, maybe TMG wouldn't need to sit for the entire game, maybe 10 minutes would do it but at least sit them on the bench and let them see they will not play if they don't play on both ends.

I'd like you to point out the specific games that Roy Williams, Bill Self and Kelvin Sampson cleared their benches and allowed themselves to be blown off the court simply to prove a point.

They really never had to do that. Especially Kelvin and Bill.

Roy Williams did it against OU in the 2003 game in the LNC. They were getting pasted and he pulled the entire starting 5 for a few minutes, maybe 4-5, and then re-inserted them and they came back to make it a game.

Bill Self pulled Tyshawn Taylor earlier this season and Tyshawn has not started since. In fact, Tyshawn played very little for a stretch of games in the middle of the season, but has started to play more of late.

Sampson used to pull players all the time if they weren't giving effort on both ends. Ebi Ere was getting pulled in both 02 and 03 for this at times. Alex Spaulding used to get pulled almost every game. Evan Wiley got pulled a bunch. J R Raymond, Drew Lavender, Aaron McGhee...need I go on?

With walk-ons?

Not even close to what you've been advocating, and you know it. Stop with the foolishness.

I'm only saying walk-ons because that's all we have. If not Franklin and Gerber, then have Pledger or Crocker play point guard, or Cade Davis. Make it point guard by committee.

If Tiny doesn't want to hustle then play Allen, Wright, Fitz, and Hardrick.

We have the players to use if these guys don't want to hustle. It may not be pretty, but he recruited all of them.

And you think that would give us the best chance to win, playing Cade Davis and/or Tony Crocker at point guard? We're in the business of winning games here. This isn't little league.

As a player, I had a problem with it to a certain extent. If the player is a good student, works hard day in/day out, then it is tough to cut them loose..but with that said, I understand the methodology behind it.

It's a gray area, because whether someone likes it or not, college sports are a business, but the foundation (student-athletes) is not. If Capel is going to have a serious chat with Hardrick, Willis or anyone about transfering, it needs to be before they get into their uppergraduate course work, so most likely between the Soph. and Junior seasons.

That's why Allen needs to stay, you don't cut someone loose when they are less than a year from their degree (assuming he is)...that's just poor ethics. If the coach goes through the process with diligence and care, is honest with his player and helps him find a new school (which happens a lot more than most realize) than I am ok with it. The player has to be honest with himself as well when it comes to their abilities and where they fit into the program.

Capel has made some mistakes in recruiting, winning is part of the game at this level. You don't just tear through the locker room and give someone "their walking papers", sit down and develop a plan which is best for your player, whether that be with OU or somewhere else. It's no different than successfully managing your employee's career.

The "walking papers" comment was made by me and it was directed towards the players who don't want to work on both ends of the floor, or who don't want to work period.

I don't think Allen's scholarship should be pulled because he does only have 1 year left so you aren't getting much. I'd just like to see him get some playing time early in the season so by mid-season or conference play he is actually helping.

I do think Capel should have a talk with Willis and Hardrick and maybe a few others and let them know they won't see any meaningful minutes, or simply aren't good enough, and help them find someplace else to play.

do you have a list of ship you'd like to reschind?

A "Reschindler's List" so to speak?
