6. Oklahoma: $94.1 million
AP/Sue Ogrocki

It's hard to remember now, but two decades ago Oklahoma was searching for an answer a full 10 years after the departure of Barry Switzer. The program had fallen into some disrepair under a succession of three replacements until a young defensive coordinator named Bob Stoops was plucked off of Steve Spurrier's staff at Florida in December 1998. The rest has been pretty much a nonstop gravy train. Oklahoma football's $58.4M in profits in fiscal 2015-16 ranked #4 in the nation.

women's bball lost 4 million.

That's not going to be allowed to go on forever. Even though the athletic department doesn't get any state funds that I know of, running a program in the red perpetually is going to make our elected leaders bring the hammer down someday.

And with OU they don't need any more excuses than they already have to make an example of us.

Logic and the fact that it isn't tax dollars we're losing won't have anything to do with it.

Oliver - you are talking about getting rid of basically ever sport but football and maybe men's basketball then. They all lose money.

Sure I am. What? You think you can continue to run a business in the red for decades and not pay a price? That's foolish.

At some point, on some day, someone is going to say "That's Enough!" Given Oklahoma's recent leadership performance in the governor's office and with the actions of our legislature, I think that day may come sooner than some of us think.

Irrelevant discussion.

How many sports other than football make money? At how many schools does football break even? You have too many questions that surround this issue.

---how much profit does the English Department make? This isn't a profit-driven online university.

---name a sport that costs no money and provides enough scholarships to satisfy Title IX.

---You are presumably trying to get into the Big Ten or Pacific Twelve, and you are trying to enhance your image. You want to try eliminating women's basketball again? Since you did once, it won't exactly help your image if you even cut back on women's basketball.

---Gasso, irrelevant comparison. What are softball coaches paid? How much money goes into a softball field vs a basketball stadium? It might be more relevant to compare a salary to that of another basketball coach. But, don't forget, this one bailed you our of a public relations fiasco that probably endured until well after 2002.

Overall the university makes money from sports. Yes, most individual sports lose money but football, donations, tv revenue, etc keep us in the profit overall.

Making this reference is eerily similar to the logic that congressmen and senators give for providing themselves their outlandish retirement benefits. Sherri has been more than well paid for all services rendered to the University of Oklahoma. But services rendered prior to 2002 should have no bearing on her compensation today.

Sherri earns big bucks to win basketball games and championships. She needs to win more of both to earn what she is paid today. Were she on the open market today she would need to take a big cut in pay. Probably close to $250-400K.
