ESPN fires announcer Ron Franklin

ESPN has fired announcer Ron Franklin after he reportedly berated a female colleague.

The network had pulled him from its radio coverage of Saturday's Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, and Franklin issued a public apology Monday.

Sideline reporter Jeannine Edwards wrote in an e-mail to USA Today in response to Internet reports Monday that Franklin called her "sweet baby" in a condescending tone Friday. When she objected, he used a derogatory term. Edwards said a colleague reported the incident to ESPN officials.

"Based on what occurred last Friday, we have ended our relationship with him," ESPN spokesman Mike Soltys said Tuesday.

Franklin had worked for ESPN since 1987, calling primarily college football and basketball. He focused on the Big 12 in recent years.

They had bumped him off of the big Monday games anyway. This is just the last chapter in his decline. He has been very average at his job for the last 4-5 years

He really hasn't been the same since he had that car accident.

Looks like we found Bob Barry's replacement. Sorry Carpenter.

It's too bad.

Having Ron Franklin and Jon Sunvold do those Big Monday games back in the day was the best.

I even enjoyed Franklin and Frachilla... I thought they were very solid.

So we've got Old Man Musburger and Knight again this year for Big Monday?

That sucks.

Can't wait for more dynamite analysis about how our shooters need to use the pump fake.

Guess he can move back to OKC and get his old job back. Maybe KREF will hire another washed up old media type?

Did he used to work in the OKC market?

Seems like at one time he was the voice of UT sports (on the radio). I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere...

Completely agree on Franklin/Sunvold. I also enjoyed the Franklin/Gottfried duo for ESPN's College Football night games.

And its continually frustrating how Knight never seems to do his homework, something Frachilla at least shows he is capable of doing.

Not sure about OKC, but he did work in Tulsa at one point in time.

And you're right, he was UT's voice in the early 80's.

I like Bob Knight as a commentator. He is a bit dry but I like what he says.

Does it really matter who does Big Mondays? I don't think we will be featured often.

This will be the first year I won't be watching much Big Monday broadcasts. I got a bunch of new books for Christmas and I'll be reading those with the game on in the background.

This is the first OU basketball season since 1975 that I was not anticipating basketball starting. This is also the first time since 1975 I wished football season lasted into March or April to get us by until baseball.

Thanks Jeff, Oronde, TMG, Tiny, and WW. My wife will be sending your thank you's; They should be coming in the mail because she's glad I'll be willing to do something on Saturdays instead of watching basketball.

Wish he would of done some homework while at New Mexico, probably would of won some games.

This.

Knight clearly does NO homework on the teams playing. All of his comments are totally generic and not team-specific (see the "pump fake" analysis ad nausem).

Frachilla clearly does do his homework and generally has very good insights about the teams playing on a given night.

No joke, pump faked a guy at the gym the other night and some onlooker made a Bob Knight comment. Definitely his calling card.

Bob Knight announcing the Crosstown Shootout tonight: "He's got room, he's gonna score here" ...the guy proceeded to get stuffed. Unreal.
