In the interest of full disclosure I am a friend of Scotts, but the couple of chances I have had to listen to him on the game broadcasts he has added a unique and informed viewpoint to the game. It is almost like having a microphone in the coaches office, the locker room and the huddle. Listening to him talk about what set they are running and who the play will go to is the next best thing to having coach Kruger provide running commentary of the game. Scott is an accomplished coach in his own right and it shows in his analysis of both teams and his player knowledge of Sooners and opponents. Mike Houck was an well known institution but Scott Thompson brings a new element to color commentary.

I like his commentary, and he definitely adds a cerebral nature to the color commentary that I like. He lacks some polish in terms of radio broadcast. Last night, Toby pitched him a softball about Manyang looking for some deeper commentary. It was something like this:

TRow: "Manyang really displayed some skill there, didn't he?"
Scott: "Yup."

Dead silence for about five seconds before Toby picked it back up.

I'm not sure. But I remember not really like Houck on the broadcast when he started also. Thompson seems a little lost as a broadcaster right now.

Of course he needs experience to become a smooth radio broadcaster. After all, he is a coach by trade, not a radio broadcaster. I was just talking about the content he adds to the broadcast. And by the way, he's only 3 games into his radio gig so it's a little unfair to judge him on that aspect. Knowing the professional he is, by the end of the year he will be much improved with his timing and delivery, but what he adds in knowledge is already shining through.

No offense intended to your friend, but OU hoops has brought in two first-year broadcasters this season -- one for radio, one for TV. I'd like to think we could be more than a training ground for newbies.

I listened to him for the first time and he seemed to do a good job. It is tough to follow Mike Houck because Mike had done it for so long.

He is very knowledgeable so it will be a good addition. However OU and Joe are trying to save money at all costs and paying for real color guys isn't high on his priority list.

Scott will do well because he knows basketball. I'm just glad we don't have another cheerleader like Chris Plank is for football on the sideline.

Brian Brinkley is the best basketball announcer OU has.

I've listened in at least twice to the radio broadcast and really enjoy what Scott brings. Didn't know his background but that makes sense. He really does know what is going on on the floor and is able to point out things like when the team runs a really good set. More than once he has made a comment during a break about what the team needs to accomplish on its next possession and it's exactly what takes place. As he adds professional chops he can become a great addition.
